Anyone have a good tomato sauce recipe?

I am done with buying jarred tomato sauce.  I'm wondering if anyone has a good recipe, preferably one for the crockpot.
Thanks ladies!

Re: Anyone have a good tomato sauce recipe?

  • Not crockpot but it's easy. 1 28 oz can crushed tomatoes.

I sautée some garlic and onion in EVOO
    Add whole can of tomatoes
Add in salt, Italian herbs, pepper
I also add some red pepper flakes
    Simmer about 15 mins

Google blue cheese tomato sauce w spinach . I found it via the nest and it is to die for.

  • We do chunky sauce but you could purée it if you want smooth:
    1 bell pepper
    2 carrots
    1 onion
    2-3 garlic cloves
    6ish button mushrooms
    1-2 tbsp ital seasoning
14 oz can of diced tomatoes
    14oz can plain tomato sauce
Salt, pepper, crushed red pepper to taste

Sauté/sweat chopped carrot, bell pepper, and onion until soft. Add garlic for another min or so on med-low heat. Add diced tomatoes and spices, cook for a few min until tomatoes start to break. Add sauce & sliced mushrooms. Cook at least 5 more min. (If you want to purée do it before adding mushrooms).

If you want to add ground beef or turkey you can do it with the veggies at the beginning. You can add in other veggies, like chopped zucchini, at the beginning or spinach at the same time as the garlic.

Just made some this weekend!  It's not crockpot, but is really easy.  This is how I do it...

Heat 1/2 cup of olive oil and throw in a small chopped onion and 2 cloves of garlic, minced; saute until soft.  Add chopped carrot, celery and salt & pepper; saute until soft, about 5-10 minutes.   Add 2 large cans (32oz??) of crushed tomatoes and a few whole bay leaves.  Simmer for 1 hour.  Remove bay leaves and gradually add pads of butter, and taste, to cut any bitterness.

I usually double this and freeze half for a quick dinner.

ETA:  I wanted to add that I usually leave it chunky, but you could puree it so it's smooth like marinara sauce.

  • Sautee garlic and onion in pan over olive oil.  Add one can Centos crushed tomatoes. Simmer/reduce 1 hr for flavors to develop.
