If you had the choice?

I wet to the hospital last night for test to see if I was leaking fluid (i wasn't) but they noticed I had pretty high blood pressure about 150/101 I believe.. But my blood tests came back okay. The nurse sent me home and said if I get headaches or blurry vision / spots to come back in..

I went home, started getting a headache but nothing serious.. We went out for supper and I still had a headache by the time I got home so I was getting concerned but decided to wait and see if it was still there in the morning, and it was so today I checked my BP at home and it was 170/103 which is really high for me so I went back to L&D and I'm here now they checked my bloodwork and it seems okay, and when they were monitoring babies heartbeat and everything that was okay but my BP was still a little high. So the doctor asked me IF I want to stay for the night to be monitored, and ill have an in depth ultrasound in the morning.. it was entirely my choice they didn't make it seem like it was very very urgent that I stay.. ( I did agree to stay ) but I've been here by myself all day stressing large about every pointless thing that crosses my mind like the fact that I forgot to feed my cats today and the huge mess I left at home, and the fact that my boyfriend will only be off work at 930-10 tonight and I'm stuck here without anything but my phone.

I guess there's not much of a point to this but I'm wondering if you had the option of staying the night alone for the in depth ultrasound in the morning or going home and potentially not being able to get scheduled in for the ultrasound, what would you choose?

Also what exactly do they look at when doing an "in depth ultrasound" ?

  • Not sure what type of u/s your doc is referring to, but I think you're wise to stay. I like to err on the side of caution.

  • In depth ultrasound they measure the basics, but also how often he is 'breathing', moving etc. what the hr does during movement or contractions. Not sure about all of it, a coworker was telling me about hers and the two things that she brought up were that he wasn't moving much or practicing breathing much.

  • With BP that high and having had a headache, I would stay, personally.

  • Sorry for all the typos, and yea I was a little dizzy right before leaving for the hospital, I thought maybe it was just my anxiety thinking something could be wrong but sure enough BP of 170/103 would do that..

I've been getting anxiety just not knowing what could be going on so I figured it was best to just stay and this way they can keep monitoring regularly.
  • But holy crap am I ever bored here by myself, called all my family to see if they can come see me even for a little and bring me something to eat but they all seem to be too busy. No fun.

This is called a biophysical profile (BPP) where baby gets an overall score compared to total possible score. I agree with sweetpeak, this is probably what you're getting. But weird they'd wait until tomorrow morning.

  • Thanks for the information, I thought it was strange too that they wouldn't fit me in somewhere tonight for it but I didn't ask too many questions. But crossing my fingers it all goes well, I've had a pretty complication free pregnancy so far other then GD and now random high BP so wasn't sure what they are gonna look for.
  • I would certainly stay... I'm sorry your family and SO can't come to hang out with you and be supportive :(

  • Yes I would have stayed. I like to be careful when it comes to LO. I'm sure I would be anxious about all the same things but yes, I still would have stayed to make sure LO is ok.
  • I would've stayed... Not for the u/s, but for the high BP. (I had my biophysical profile done in the clinic, which is why I wouldn't stay just for that).

  • Staying, even without the ultrasound, sounds like a smart idea to me. With BP that high it is good to be monitored. Good luck!

  • I think staying is a good idea. Is there a TV in the room at all? I'm sorry you're bored, I hope your BF brings you some fun magazines or something - could you ask a nurse if they have any extra magazines in the waiting room that you could read?

  • To top off the boredom they gave me the crappiest supper ever lol! The joys of hospital food, but on the plus side my BP is going down :) yay!

And as soon as he's done work he's coming to see me with my buffalo chicken wrap that I have waiting in my fridge for me :) trying to stay positive and look at all the good things like free wifi so I can watch all the Netflix I want.

Listening to the crying new borns though, is making me soooooooooo excited / happy / nervous / sad its kind of overwhelming, I just can't wait to have my baby girl here and not have to worry about the whacky things my body is randomly doing.
  • I agree it was wise to stay. Your cats won't die overnight. ;)

  • I might be nuts but I'd go home. If they aren't insisting you stay, get some rest in your own bed. How far from the hospital are you?

  • Only about a 5 minute drive away but we share a car so by taxi it would take me maybe 10-15 minutes to get there. I debated going home but figured its best that they take my vitals throughout the night and in the morning to make sure it stays low.

If my ultrasound goes the way I hope I will get to go home but if its not the way they like things to be I am being induced tomorrow. I'm pretty nervous for to know the outcome !
