Any equestrians here?

Hi ladies.  We just found out earlier this week that we are pregnant and I ride regularly.  DH wants me to stop completely.  I've committed to no more jumping, but do you think normal riding is okay?

One of the nurses said absolutely not (she also said no running/jogging because she's convinced that that causes babies to be born with hematomas) and another said it's fine but cut out jumps.  Anyone else ride while pregnant (at least in first trimester)?  Thanks so much.

Re: Any equestrians here?

  • I wouldn't ride at all, but all my horses were a bit nutty three day eventers. Even if I had an old schoolie, I'd be timid. I had my worst fall from one if the most bombproof horses in our barn. Also, LOL to the nurse that said no running because hematomas.

  • That nurse is nuts! I wouldn't have ridden my horse but he wasn't a quiet horse. I'd hack an old school horse but like pp said, nothing is without risk. Do what you are comfortable with I'd say
  • I am in my second trimester and I still ride. I've been given conflicting advice from several doctors. One said it was fine because I've been riding for a long time and my muscles are used to it. I still ride my own horse because I know what he's like. I don't think it's wise to ride horses you don't know. Although I jumped only a few days ago, I experienced cramps afterwards so I've decided to only walk my horse from now on. If you ride a horse that is safe and you know you won't fall off I wouldn't worry and keep riding.
  • I ride for work and rode through the first trimester.  I felt fine to ride after that, but your uterus is above the pelvic bone after week 14, so I wasn't willing to risk a fall at that point (despite the support of my doctor).  I actually thought riding helped with some of the symptoms.  It's a personal choice.  As long as your DR is OK with it, then it's about your comfort level.
  • I do dressage and plan to ride to at least 30 weeks. I will probably have to stop competing by 25 at the latest, but we will see. I am careful and don't get on anything crazy. I feel safer on a horse than in a car. If you ride daily, like I do, our bodies are used to it. Georgina Bloomberg just jumped a 1.6M Grand Prix at 5 months. Not saying keep jumping, but do what YOU feel is safe.
