Any recommendations for a high safety-rated, yet easy to use convertible carseat? I have a 9 month old son who's in the 98th percentile for height, we're going to need to make the switch soon!
We have the Clek Foonf in my car and the Evenflo SureRide DLX in H's car, both were very easy to install and both have a very high RFing height and weight limit. There is a huge price difference between the two seats we have, so it really depends on your budget. The Foonf was $500 and the Evenflo was less than $100.
ETA: There is a great facebook group called Car Seats for The Littles, I recommend joining it. They have a list of what they consider the best seats for different categories, high RFing height being one of those categories. I have learned so much from that group, they have a bunch of techs on the board and can give you a lot of insight into certain seats and even help you install them correctly.
Ditto checking out that FB page but I'll tip you off now on something you'll learn there - there are no safety ratings. The tests are pass fail so a $100 seat is just as safe as a several hundred dollar seat. The difference is usually in the padding and look of the seat. Britax seats seem to be recommended a lot because it's become a name people feel comfortable with. I only mention this in case you're considering one. They're safe and we have one but they have some of the shortest shells on the market meaning they're outgrown early compared to other seats. Luckily I have a peanut since I didn't know that when I bought it and got pulled into the supposed prestige of the Britax lol I'll be going in a totally different direction for the second baby - most likely a Graco.
We have an Evenflo Triumph. One of the highest rated on Consumer Reports. I think the way they do the ratings is by value. So they look at the features it offers, comfort, ease of use compared to it's price. They were around $130. We have had them almost 3 years and used them with two kids and they are like new.
We love our diono radian seats. They're originally over $300, but I found both of them on sale online for < $215. They have a high limit for rear facing, which was important to me, and will be able to use as a forward facing seat/booster until she's ready to be sitting in the regular car with nothing. Definitely worth the price for me! And it has an easy latch system - one that my MIL has has a ball that has to be leveled in the side, and you have to stick towels underneath it and whatnot to level it out - it drives me nuts.
We ERF till past 2. So my recs are Diono Radian, Clek Foonf, Chicco Nextfit, or the Graco Size4Me/Headwise. All of these seats have some of the highest shells on the market. This is important for larger children to keep the RF till the rec at least. I have a big baby and we have a Radian RF for him with an angle adjuster in DH's Dodge Dart (fits amazing like this BTW), and thea Clek Foonf in my car. I chose the Clek because it was made for ERF, plus it has some amazing features, was the easiest install, and has crumple zone technology. It's awesome, but expensive. I got ours on sale for around 350$.
Also, since you have a large baby like me I'd steer clear of Britax seats (really small seat shells) and the Graco MyRides. There are a few others with small shells (Cosco Scenera for one), but those ones are the more popular. Also, yes all seats must pass the same tests, though some do the crash test with higher speeds. GL!
We recently purchased the graco size4me 70 (also called graco my size 70 or graco headwise, depending on where it is sold and when it came out). We really like it and haven't had any problems with it. It adjusts like the chicco nexfit or graco smartseat, but it is about $100 cheaper! It also adjusts so your child can fit rear facing longer than most car seats because the back adjusts to go up so high. Hope this helps!
