XP 6-9 month board: Have any of you transitioned OUT of the Merlins Sleep SUit?

Posted on 6-9 month board as well:

Hi Everyone,

So, my LO is 25 weeks. I had started the transition around 23 weeks to get her out of the sleep suit-naps in a long sleeper and sleep sack, and she was doing great until her little tooth start popping out. she did some 45 minute naps but some naps were 1.5-2 hours.

so, I figured it was kind of cruel to take away something that was obviously comforting and familiar when she was in pain, so I kept the sleep suit. then, after her tooth popped out, her grandpa and grandma visit-bringing with them a cold.   So now she's fighting a cold, and since I have her mattress elevated to help her sleep, she has rolled down the one time I didn't have her in her suit for a nap (in the wash). AND we're going on a 5 day trip next week, which is probably not a good time to take the suit away either.

SO-the goal is to start the transition out of the suit at 7 months.  So my question for all of you who have transitioned/started the transition

-How did you do this?  Did you do naps, or all at once?

-How long did it take?

-How old was your LO?

The reason I'm wanting to do it now is she's more mobile and has had some decent naps in the sleeper and sack.  She can roll to front to back, and is almost crawling and close to sitting up on her own.  I'd like to get her out before it becomes too much of a crutch as well.

TIA!

  • We did this recently, maybe when DS was 7 or 7 1/2 months old.  He did really well with it.  He takes two naps a day, so I started just doing the Sleep Sack instead of the Suit for his morning nap.  I call it his 'throw away' nap because a lot of times I end up waking him up from it so we can go out for a walk or the park with DD.  So I started with that because he counted on that stretch of sleep the least.  Then about two weeks later, we just go rid of it.  So he just sleeps in the Sack now.  I've heard of some people doing two sleep sacks to start, maybe you could try that if she starts to resist?

  • I just did it cold turkey at around 7 months.  One night he woke up with his suit really wet so I had to put him to sleep without it and he did very well.  The next night I just put him in a sleep sack & he did well.  We just never looked back.  He was ready to ditch the suit.

  • We did it at 6.5 months at the same time as sleep training.  We did it cold turkey for both nights and naps.  SInce we did it at the same time as sleep training I can not say how long it took, but the training worked in 3 days and since then she has slept in the sack with no issue for nights and naps.

  • We stopped it for naps about a week before going cold turkey at bedtime along with CIO.  It took 3 days and they now STTN about 12 hours.  Their naps shortened by about 30 mins but aside from that no change.
