I think she has a cold?

Fever around 100.5- sneezing, watery eyes, whiney and not wanting to eat but a couple of ounces... I know her teeth are bothering her but I don't think that's the full problem? If it is a cold what does the doc do, give them meds or let it run it's course? I realize this might be a stupid question. Any advice?

  • Sounds like a cold. For a low grade fever like that, our pedi usually recommends not giving Tylenol unless LO is really miserable. Saline nose drops can help with congestion as well as a humidifier or just having baby in a steamy bathroom. Hope she feels better soon!

  • They will check for infection (ears/sinus) and signs of other childhood illnesses (sores in mouth, rash) if warranted. If there is an infection, they'll prescribe antibiotics. Otherwise, they'll just counsel you on humidifier use, saline drops and nose suction if needed. They will also tell you what signs to look for that warrant a trip back. There unfortunately are no decongestants for babies.

If the cold just started and she's not showing signs of something more, the nurses will probably give you instructions for what to do over the phone. If you're not sure what to do for a baby with a cold, definitely call and ask.
  • Yup this was DD less than a week ago. Still fighting it. But DD had a cough too. Gave her tylenol to break her fever and she threw it up. Then again. She may not want to eat for a while. DD didn't for almost 12 hours. We took her in immediately and he said just a cold but he said we did great bringing her in right away. Better to be safe than sorry. Sounds like a cold. I'd call your on call pedi if you have one. Hope she feels better.
