Sorry I have been MIA for a couple days. My son Cayden Ross was born Friday 9/6 at 4:52pm after quite the unexpected ordeal! He is 8lb 12oz and 22in long of pure miracle perfection!
It all started Thursday morning when I went to the doctor because of headaches and nose bleeds. They checked my blood pressure and it was 138/100 so they sent me to L&D for an NST, only expecting to be there for the 45 minute test then to go home. Well the NST went well, my bp came down and baby was happy as a clam. However, my blood work was off. My platelets were low and my uric acid was high (basically showing preeclampsia). Because I was 39.5 weeks, the doctor decided to just admit me for an induction in the morning. They started me on Cervidil that night and planned to break my water the next morning. At 5am, my water broke all on its own and labor started, although I was only 2cm dilated at that point so they started me on Pitocin to help speed things up. I labored well throughout the morning and everything was going great! Around 4:30pm I decided I wanted the epidural and the anesthesiologist was brought in. As the anesthesiologist walked through the door, all hell broke lose. My nurse ran in, followed by about 3 other nurses and the doctor. The doctor said my babies hr dropped on the monitor (down to 54!) and I had to deliver now, if I was far enough along to push I would, but if not I would need a c-section. She checked me and I was only 4cm so she said we had to do an emergency c-section. Next thing I know, one nurse is putting an oxygen mask on me, another is climbing in bed with me to insert a urinary catheter, and the anesthesiologist is explaining to me that I will need general anesthesia because there is no time for a spinal. They rushed me down the hall explaining the process and I no longer than got into the OR and I was under anesthesia. From the time they told me I needed the c-section, to the time my son was born was only 6 minutes! The staff was absolutely amazing and I could not have asked for a better team. When Cayden was born, he was completely ghost white pale, limp, and not crying. They thought they lost him at first, but with a little chest stimulation they got him to cry and then they whisked him off to the sick nursery (one level below NICU, but luckily he didn't need a full NICU because this hospital doesn't have one). I woke up some time later in my room with my mom, stepmom, and dad all around me, luckily they had pictures of Cayden so I could see he was ok. The doctor has no idea what caused his hr to drop, and said we likely will never know because the placenta and his cord were all great. He spent the night in the sick nursery hooked up to heart monitors and under an oxygen dome. I was not able to hold him, but I was at least able to see him that night. Saturday morning I was able to hold him and try feeding. He is having trouble breast feeding, but he is drinking some pumped colostrum for now. He is on a dextrose IV and the nurses think that is why he won't nurse well so hopefully he will improve once the IV comes out. He was doing so well Saturday morning that the doctor allowed him to be disconnected from the heart monitors and go to my room with me! It is so nice having him by my side, I can finally sleep now! He is such an angel, so laid back and not bothered by anything. He just sleeps all the time, in fact I have to wake him up for feedings!
He gave me quite the scare at first, but he is doing so well now and I am feeling so blessed! He truly is my miracle baby, and I owe it all to the amazing staff here that jumped in and really knew what to do. Nothing went as planned, but in the end I have a perfect, healthy baby boy and I could not ask for more. I am so completely in love! I will share pictures once I get home and settled in. I will hopefully go home Monday, but maybe not until later depending on how things go.
Re: Been MIA, Cayden is here! (Long birth story)
Out of curiosity, did you get to be the first to hold him? Other than docs/med staff, I mean?
