We just got a HE washer, and I can't seem to get our diapers sufficiently clean. They smell and leak all the time. I use Rockin' Green detergent, which is for HE washers. I tried using Calgon water softener (we have hard water), but it didn't help.
Any tips for how to get them clean and how to strip them? I know you can't use Dawn in HE washers, and I don't want to use bleach b/c I'm not comfortable with it getting on her skin.
Re: Cloth diapering with a HE washer
My routine is a cold water rinse, hot water wash (on the longest, heavy duty cycle) with a cold rinse, and then an extra cold rinse. Lately I've been doing multiple rinses, and that seems to help a little, but not a lot.
FWIW we do a warm wash, hot wash w/ detergent and another warm wash. We found that the rinses just weren't cutting it. We also add a wet towel and a gallon of water to the drum each time to re-soak the towel to add weight to the machine to trick it into adding more water.
I still go to my mom's to use her supercapacity top loader every so often. I'm going today and will start with clean diapers, then add 1/4 cup bleach with a long hot wash with 15-20 drops of tea tree oil and 15-20 drops of Grapefruit seed extract, then add a squirt of blue dawn for another long hot wash, then wash with Tiny Bubbles and then rinse, rinse, rinse rinse.... It's a PITA to do, but it disinfects the diapers, which makes me feel better. I probably do it once every few months, though once a month would be better.
I also rinse and soak my overnight diapers in the morning now, so that the bulk of the pee gets out of them to avoid ammonia smell.
I never had these issues with my top loader.
