Your opinion, are these types of shoes good for gym and bike riding or do I need to get a pair that has a more athletic sole?

I think they're fine personally. DS1 has a pair of Puma's that he wears daily. They have gym daily.

I think this is fine for gym, playing, and riding bikes, as long as the kid feels like the shoes are comfortable.

I'm a tennis shoe junkie and those are fine! For track we use new balance and for basketball we use high tops with ankle support
