Twins first then TTC

My twins are 17.5mo. Currently my DH is in law school at night and working full time during the day. I'm thinking I want to try for #3 after we do a celebratory trip after he graduates this May. If we try after our celebratory trip and get KU immediately (it took a year and a half and clomid to get the twins), they would be at least 3 when baby comes.

What made you decide you were ready and capable to have a newborn and twin toddlers? I'm nervous about being on bedrest again with twin toddlers, being exhausted while pregnant and having twin toddlers, or having the first 3mo of non-sleep with twin toddlers..

Re: Twins first then TTC

  • Would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this. My twins are almost 15 months, and we're thinking about trying again in 3-4 months (provided we've saved enough money for another round of IF treatments).
    Me: 30, Dx Unexplained/hypothalamic amenorrhea
    DH: 31, normal!
    April/May 2011: Menopur + Ovidrel +TI = BFN
    Oct 2011: Menopur + Hcg +IUI = BFP!
    Beta #1 (13dpiui)= 129.7, Beta #2 (15 dpiui)= 305
    PAIF/SAIF always welcome!

  • My twins will be 3 soon and I still can't decide if we want to try again (via IVF). It has gotten so much easier that it's hard at this point to want to bring back the crazy, chaotic phases of a younger baby. I just don't want to believe that I'm done for good either.
  • Im the opposite of the situation but will be right there with TTC after twins when we try again but what made us decided for baby #2 and surprise 3 haha was that our son (who will be 4 in feb) was able to do things on his own. He was not in diapers, could feed himself, get snacks out of the fridge if he was hungry between meals, could entertain himself, and could help out like picking up toys, etc... That was our deciding factor, That our baby was no longer a baby and could be independent and not need us 101% of the time for every little thing. Once he was able to start doing more on his own we started discussing the next. Once these twin boys are at that stage we will do the same we may give it an extra six months but who knows. Also I personally like this age gap he is old enough to not be jealous and is sssoo excited to finally get siblings. He has a general idea of whats going on but yet they wont be so far apart that they cant ever play together or do anything together. Im not sure if I am any help because I am doing it the opposite but thats basically the same plan we have when we TTC after the boys are here.

    Together 6 wonderful years.

  • My boys are 22 months and we started TTC when they turned 18 months. Just found out we have another baby(ies???) on the way! Our boys will be exactly 2.5 when this one comes!
We are thrilled....I think it is a personal decision. For us we wanted them to be close together but hopefully a bit more independent!

Congrats on the new little one! :):) I've been lurking this thread as well.....it will probably be at least a couple years before we start TTC again, but I don't want too huge of a gap between the twins and future siblings....then again, like OP mentioned, going through pregnancy and the newborn phase with twin toddlers is definitely a daunting idea....

  • There will be pros and cons to all spacing. A local Mom got accidentally KU and her twins were 16m when she had her daughter. And while she said it was nuts the first 6 months, at 3 and 4, they are super close. We are thinking of ttc in a couple months, and are hoping for 2.5y spacing. My main push is my age, no issues with those who do, but I am hoping to be done with babies by the time I am 40! Good luck in whatever you decide!

  • We're the opposite w a 3yo and twin newborns, but I can at least speak to having two different ages in the house. Right now our biggest challenges are making sure everyone's schedules are accommodated. Our 3yo is v active and needs to run around daily - he's not a sit and play for hours type of person and that is really challenging w two infants. It's hard to get out of the house at all, but we do it.

However, I really like the 3yr age gap. He's potty trained, can follow directions (if he chooses, haha), and is helpful and not jealous. 3 is a hard age, but the tradeoff is the independence. Of course the babies aren't in his business, but still.

So our reason to TTC was for a sibling, and obv that's not a consideration w twins first, but just to share some experiences w the age gap.

    AHH CONGRATS!!!

Listening in on this post too. We have recently decided to TTC again. DH wants to start ASAP but I want to wait till Feb at the earliest so the girls will be 26 months old (I'd really like to wait till Apr so they will be closer to 2.5 years). I want them to be close in age but a big enough gap that the girls will be helpful and independent because they are super clingy right now. Plus, I'd like to try for a VBAC so I want at least 24 months in between.

  • PS. I think the only thing I won't be looking forward to will be the sleepless nights with twin toddlers.
