High-Risk Pregnancy

I'm A Gestational Diabetic but My Son is only 2lbs and 13 oz

Hello everyone

As said in the Discussion title, I am a Gestational Diabetics, but My Little "Z" is only 2lbs and 13 ounces.

I wasn't technically "diagnosed" but when i took my blood glucose test, it was VERY HIGH(i blame that on the dr pepper cravings i had earlier that week).

My doctor suggested that I be treated as a gestational diabetic. I have to monitor my blood glucose every 2 hours after i eat breakfast, lunch and dinner.. and when i wake up first thing in the morning.

Anyway(MY STORY)

at about 24-25 weeks, i experienced a "gushy watery liquid, cramping, and spotting.. I went to a "civilian" hospital and I ended up being put on Bedrest for 14 days and had to take steroids and progesterone suppositories. The hospital recommended I go to a High Risk OB/GYN. At my next appointment at my HROB/GYN everything seemed normal. No more "shortened cervix", no more bed rest (THANK GOD). But, they asked if i wanted to see how big the baby had gotten. Of course, I said yes. They then told me he only weighed 1lb 13oz(at 26 weeks). I had to be monitored once a week for three weeks. At my 3rd appointment(3rd week), we measured him. Everything was fine, as far as the placenta, umbilical cord, amniotic fluid,.. everything was fine except he had only gained 1lb in 3 weeks.. Totaling 2lbs,13oz.  He's in the 7th percentile

MY DILEMMA IS... How do i deal with being a GD and having a small baby. I only have 10 weeks left, I don't want him to have to stay in the hospital for months upon months, just so he gains weight.

I just want a perfect Zakaryah.

  • I'm in the exact same situation right now. I've had first trimester bleeding, awful morning sickness, ptl, progesterone shots, HBR, home bed rest, gd, etc, and at 36 weeks the baby measured at 5 lbs flat. That is the 6th percentile. I've had such an awful pregnancy and to have this happen now is a total blow. I feel like it's my fault for her not growing because I was so sick in the beginning and then I had to follow the GD diet. The doctors haven't found any reason for the low weight. I have a follow up on Wednesday at 37 weeks and they may induce within the week after that.

  • My second GD baby was in the 9th percentile when she was born - 6lbs even - at 39w. Small does not necessarily mean unhealthy, and doesn't necessarily mean they'll be in the hospital just to gain weight. Continue following whatever your drs have told you and try not to stress about it. Some babies are just meant to be small, regardless of GD or not. Someone has to make up the highest and lowest percentiles.

  • I have GD and at 29 weeks my baby is 3.5 pounds and this is the 70th percentile and they are concerned he is too big so the difference in weight is not a huge difference from the low to high on the percentile scale. The doctors said it doesn't mean anything to be concerned about its just a guide to help them establish a median size to evaluate the baby.
Hope things get better for you!!
