Sleeping baby part 3: diaper changes

Warning: this may be a ridiculous question.

I know we've discussed not waking sleeping babies to feed, but do you ladies wake your LOs to change their diapers? I don't like the idea of letting him stay in a dirty diaper but whenever I change it, he wakes up and I feel guilty. Am I over thinking this?

  • I personally don't wake DS to change him, although he probably averages a change every 2-3 hours, sometimes more.  I change him when he eats, even at night so he's never in a diaper for all that long.

  • Yes, should have clarified. I always change after a feeding when he is still awake or drowsy, but a lot of times he will sleep for 4 hour stretches and I don't want to wake him then. (And boo, my long stretches are always during the day and never at night!)

  • I usually change a diaper when I want LO to wake up.
She dirties them at about this rate also. So I change I diaper every 2-3hrs. Of course at night we go for longer stretches. I don't wake her.
  • Since I'm feeding every 2-3 hours, and my LO has a hard time waking up and staying awake to eat, I change her right before she eats every time. If she poops when I'm nursing her, and she's falling asleep when she's eating, I'll wake her to change her, and then usually put her back on the boob for a few to help her back to sleep.

  • Baby gets a diaper change every time he eats which is usually about every 2 hours anyway. He is cloth diapered so I don't let him go much longer than that otherwise there is the risk of leaks.

  • My baby wakes up just about every two hours (even at night), and gets changed every time he eats.

Baby gets changed with feedings. At night, though, since I know there is the possibility of him being in it for a while, I slather butt paste on to hopefully head off any irritation that may arise from it.

Edit: Hell-to-the-no do I specifically wake him up for changes!

Slathering butt paste was recommended to me by the ped so I don't have to wake LO to change her.

Really?! (I mean that in an excited way)  I'm just nervous that with 2 MOTN feedings that she would leak through if I didn't change it.  I skipped changing her wet diaper ONE TIME and she woke up with her halo and bassinet cover soaked :(  I felt so bad.

And you guys, putting LO back on the boob to soothe after changing the diaper is genius.  Why didn't I think of that?  I resorted to the portable white noise machine and rocking to get her to drift off.  DUH!
  • I figure if a dirty diaper bothers them so much they'd wake up and let us know. Otherwise we change before feedings and usually again after since he likes to poop in fresh diapers.

  • Change before eating. No waking to change.

  • I change her before she eats at night. During the day I change her when she wakes from naps and before eating. I never wake her to eat or be changed. She will let me know if she's uncomfortable!

  • I only change him at night if he's pooped or leaked. And if he's consitently leaking pee it's probably time to move up a size even if its just for bed time.

I do not change him every time he eats at night. We do load him up with cream at bedtime to prevent a rash. From what I've seen with DD must rashes are caused from poops rather than pee.
