Play Kitchens

I posted a question a little while ago about play kitchens for this age group and the consensus seemed to be they are great and a toy that has a long life as kids get older.

I have a follow up question - DS is likely going to be an only child so I'm trying to decide if one of the more narrow play kitchens will be okay for him since he won't have a sibling trying to fight for space at it. Has anyone bought one of the more narrow kitchens (think the Step 2 Cozy Kitchen) and wished you had gotten a larger one (i.e., with more "counter space"), even for just one child's use?  TIA!

Re: Play Kitchens

  • My niece has the Pottery Barn kitchen set.  It's adorable, but super pricey.  She's 5, an only child, and has used it a lot since she was 2.  Honestly, she plays with the kitchen itself, but spends more time at this little kitchen table spreading things out like she would on the counter.  So if you're looking at a more narrow version, I'm sure it'd be fine, and if you think he needs more "counter space", you could always add a small table and chairs later.

That's a great idea!  In fact, it combines two things we were already thinking about getting him for Christmas: the kitchen and one of those Little Tikes or Step 2 picnic tables.  I didn't even think about how the table would give him that extra table space for his kitchen stuff.  Thanks!!

  • DD has a Step 2 Kitchen set not sure of the name but it has the fridge, oven that opens, microwave, and the eyes of the stove sizzle. We got it at Once Upon A Child for $20 but they run about $200 in the store. I would try there I've seen some really nice ones.

  • I definitely second the recommendation for a table and chairs instead of more "counter space." We have a larger kitchen because we have two girls already, and while they do enjoy playing in the actual kitchen, if they want to spread out the still go to their little table. It also adds more imaginative elements to their play - playing restaurant, serving each other meals. The table gets used more than most of our toys! :)
