80s babies

So remember the times where parents rubbed our gums with liquor when we were teething? And having a good time was really the only thing our parents or you (depending on age) had to worry about.. Well..

My LO is the size of a green olive today.. All I can think about is the delicious taste a vodka dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olives!!

I'm on my honeymoon and all I want is one cheat for a dirty martini!!
My mom who had be in the early 80s tells me "one wont hurt" I'm thinking wtf lady what were you sippin on with me??? Lmao!

Boy how times have changed, if someone even hinted they had liquor or used it on their infant someone would be on the phone with CPS in a heartbeat..
Not to mention I don't even think of it as an option.. But hey I turned out pretty awesome..

That's my Saturday story..
Happy weekend mamas!

Re: 80s babies

  • When DS was teething, my dad suggested rubbing alcohol on his gums.  We got the same advice from my FIL, who's dad was a pediatrician and used to recommend it.  You're not even supposed to use teething gels anymore.

Part of me wanted to try it when I was desperate for sleep.  I remember thinking "My dad used it on me, and I turned out OK."  Instead, I used Hylands teething tablets, which helped too.

  • Lol, my grandma used gin on me. Probably why I like gin and tonics so much ;)

  • DD wouldn't take a pacifier as a newborn, and my grandma said I should dip it in honey, of course! *shudder*

  • My grandmother is a big proponent of whiskey on the gums!!! Sometimes, I was *almost* desperate enough to try it!

  • I could really go for a dirty, dirty martini too!!
  • I know we shudder at the idea - and rightly so! but the ammount of alcohol from a finger dipped in and rubbed on gums is sooooooo small as to be barely there really! Im not saying I advocate it, but at the same time, if you are desperate and nothing else works, (and you dont tell anyone, hehe), then why not!! just dont do it often!

Hell no! There are microbs that grow in honey that babies cannot tolerate due to their immune system not being up to snuff. The rhyme for honey that I've heard is "Until this turns 1 of this should be none."

  • I was born in early '81 and my mother learned she was pregnant when she was 4 months along with me after partying with her girlfriends for a week in Vegas. She was still sick days after getting home and my father suggested she go to the hospital.

She continued to enjoy wine and smoked a pack of cigarettes a day through her pregnancies with me and my 2 younger siblings and no one blinked an eye. We also had Jack Daniels on our gums and my parents let us sip their wine and beer as young kids (gotta love coming from an Irish/Italian family!)

Not that I condone drinking or smoking, but it was definitely a very different time back then. My RE and OB said wine is fine, but after 2 losses, I'm not taking any chances with this baby :)

  • My mom asked if she should put whiskey on my gums when I was teething. The doctor told she would be better off if she took the shot of whiskey instead to deal with it haha.
