Babies: 0 - 3 Months

anyone else have this problem?

my baby is only 15 days old... at birth he was 8lb 5oz... last week he was 7lb 8oz.. and this week he is the same. his doc told me to start feeding him every 2 hours now.. he is breastfed only.. and I just feel like I am not doing my part and it just makes me so sad. :-(  I feel like I am not doing everything I can for him after trying and trying and still getting nowhere. I am so tired and feeling depressed cause it just seems like things are not going right and there is one problem after another. First he wouldn't latch on good... and now this.  :-(

Re: anyone else have this problem?

  • what are weighted feedings? I am just nursing and when i was in the hospital i saw a LC everyday until i left. When i was in the hospital she said i was doing good and he was getting on there how he should. I just don't know why he isn't gaining weight. I just feel like i'm not doing my part as a mom.  :-(

  • Make an appointment with a LC. She'll weigh your LO before and after the feed to see how much milk he's taking in, and figure out if it's a supply issue or a milk transfer issue. Then you guys will come up with a game plan if there is a problem. It will be okay. BFing is rough for almost everyone in the beginning.

Until then, continue doing what your doing. Some babies are just slower gainers, if he was still losing weight it would be much more concerning. If it ends up being a supply issue, it will most likely fix itself as your body gets used to what he needs, if it's a transfer issue LC's have lots of tricks up there sleeves to help you.

Cheer up momma, it's not the end of the world. Just a bump in the road. My nipples literally split in half, bleed, and DS wouldn't latch in the beginning and took a while to get to his BW. Now he's up 6 pounds, and BF is getting easier and easier. Hang in there!!
  • You're doing everything right! We had the same problem and our babies are the same age. She finally started gaining weight. It's been the only thing I have cried about. Hang in there I promise it will get better.

  • thank you ladies. I ended up just trying to pump and give it to him through the bottle.. come to find out.. I was sitting there for 30 min and nothing was coming out. :-( I feel like such a bad mother and I feel like I am not able to provide for my son.. but I know that its a body thing and it needs to start getting use to this and start making some milk! I put him on formula and I figured that when it comes time to pump again I will pump and give it to him if anything comes out! keeping hopes high!

  • Currently going through this. I have to nurse her and then follow with a bottle of pumped milk. For us, it's her. She just isn't an efficient eater and cool with just a little bit of food

  • Don't let the pumped amount discourage you! Pumps aren't as efficient as babies! In the beginning, there were times I wouldn't get anything. All babies lose weight at first. Also you have to decide how much you want to BF.
  • oh i am getting excited.. now every time I pump I am getting more milk! which I am so happy about. I wish I could just have him go straight to the boob but right now I am just happy he is getting something in his little tummy.
