Bumpers?

So My daughter just turned 3 months. We will be transitioning her from our room and into her crib in her room in a couple of weeks. Right now she sleeps in her bouncy chair. I noticed today that she can push up on her legs and more upwards. She did that today in the bassinet until her head was touching the top. I have bumpers for the crib but took them off. I Read somewhere to take them off-SIDS. Anyways, now I am worried without the bumpers she will scoot up to the top of the crib and hit her head on the rails! What should I do?

Re: Bumpers?

  • We've only had breathable bumpers (thin mesh without zero real padding, mostly to keep from arms/legs getting stuck) and never had an issue with our girls truly hurting themselves by bumping their heads. I would leave the thick bumpers off.

  • Keep the bumpers off. She's not going to hit her head hard enough to cause damage.

This, exactly.  They don't have the strength to cause any real harm to themselves.  She'll bonk, it may scare her and she may cry but she won't be hurt.

  • The AAP recommends not using bumpers of any kind. DD scoots all around her crib and has hit her head a couple of times. She doesn't seem to care.
  • Another vote for no bumpers.

  • A bump on the head is much better than suffocating just putting that out there.

What do you do? You adjust and its not going to kill them to hit their head. DD did this a bunch and she is fine. They might wake up a lot in the beginning,  but eventually they won't care. Also, if you really want to you can put a cap on them at night. That provides some cushion but really its not a huge deal.

  • Keep the bumpers out for now.

Controversial, but I put mine in when ds was about 9 months old. He was walking at that age though, so I wasn't concerned with him suffocating himself on them.

But anytime before that milestone I would be afraid of using bumpers.

  • Bumpers are much more dangerous than a bump on the head.  I also vote no bumpers.

  • Nope no bumpers. I have never used them for any of my four kids and none of them have hurt themselves . My now almost four year old is a crazy sleeper too . Just not worth the risk.
  • OK THANKS! No bumpers it is!
