Tongue tied LOs?

Was anyone else's LO born with a tongue tie? She had it looked at by a paediatrician when she was born and had it clipped by a plastic surgeon by her 2nd day. Anyway, later I heard terrible things about this plastic surgeon and how awful he is and how their LOs bled so much. I didn't think we had any issues at the time but now I'm kind of paranoid. I also felt like I wasn't given a chance to really research or discuss it with anyone at the time, it just all happened so fast so she could nurse properly. In doing research later I'm learning that having a dental surgeon use a laser is a better option.
So, I'm just curious if anyone else had their LOs tongue clipped and how your LO is doing now...

Re: Tongue tied LOs?

  • Yes, my son also had a tongue tie. It was mentioned to me by my nurse as I was literally signing my discharge papers. She said the pedi at the hospital didn't think it was important to mention but as a lactation consultant she thought she should tell me. I'm so glad she did, because the next day when my son started getting dehydrated and turned slightly yellow, I had an idea of why. He had his snipped on day 7 and is doing just fine.

  • My LO had slight tongue tie.... I did a lot of research and felt it was important.... The most recommended people in my state were all peditricians and each had their own method.
I ended up going to an ENT but he clipped it and we were done.

  • My LO had hers clipped at 3 months. She couldn't eat so we clipped it and now she is fine!
  • My DS, who is now 3 and a 1/2 years old, had a severe tongue tie. We had terrible trouble with nursing and even bottle feeding. It wasn't corrected until he was five weeks old and had dropped down to his birth weight. At that point it was clipped (2 snips and about 5-10 minutes of bleeding) by an ENT. Afterwards nursing improved (he ended up nursing until 18 months) and he has had no problems with speech or eating all kinds of food now. Plus it's best to do it as early as possible to avoid having to put them under general anesthesia.
  • Hearing these positive stories makes me feel better. My concern was not that it was done but the method. Since she had it done on day 2 while still in hospital we never had any huge issues with weight loss and she was back up to her birth weight within a week. Thank you guys for sharing.

  • I'm a lurker here, but thought I would share my experience with this. My daughter had her lip and tongue tie revised by laser procedure by a dentist when she was 3 months. I found the ties on my own after researching why nursing was hurting so much. No one else ever caught it. The procedure took less than 3 minutes and there was no bleeding at all. She nursed immediately after and her latch was so much better that I could barely feel her nursing.
However, she is almost 5 months now, and we have been doing the recommended stretches and I can tell they are both starting to reattach. I'm going to consult with the dentist to see what he recommends. I would just leave it be, but the ties can cause dental and speech problems in the future.
