Natural Birth

Possible Induction

I'm 40w2d pregnant and as of 2 days ago my cervix wasn't dilated, but soft. I have an appointment tomorrow if I don't go into labor today/tonight and I'm hoping that there is some progress because I am pretty terrified of being induced. I am really set on having a natural birth and so now I am freaking out.

I've been walking around a lot and it makes my contractions stronger but not consistent.
Any of you ladies have tips for natural induction?

Re: Possible Induction

  • If you don't mind me asking, are you facing an induction, or just thinking ahead?  Because you really aren't that far from your EDD.  A lot can change very quickly!

    But to answer your question:
    Acupuncture/pressure
    Chiro Adjustment
    Sex
    Nipple Stimulation
Castor Oil (though this is a controversial one and not one I would have been willing to try)

You could ask your provider to sweep your membranes if you are dilated

    Fun Ones:
    Spicy Food
    Eggplant Parmesan
Buy a cupcake, light a candle and sing "Happy Birthday" DD and I did this the day before I went into labor with DS.  It makes for a cute picture :)

  • My OB said that she could schedule induction for the 10th. I told her I want to wait as long as possible and she said that's fine.

Thank you for the tips. I love the birthday cupcake one :) So cute!

  • It is common for a FTM to go to 41 weeks 1 day.  I would not consider induction before that point. Remember your cervix can change a lot so just because there isn't much going on now does not mean it won't happen soon.  GL!
  • Wait as long as you can, stay active, etc. DD2 was overdue and midwives were willing to let me go up to 42w. I was terrified of induction but in the end all I needed was cervidil, which I much preferred to having to do pitocin. Good luck.

  • I tried everything and none of it worked.  I ended up being induced, BUT, still had a non-medicated birth.  So even if you do face induction, know that you can still have the natural birth you were planning for :)

  • If you do get induced do not be scared, know your options either foley bulb, cervadil or pitocin. Foley bulb best when 0-1 dilation. I was induced with my daughter at 37 weeks with pitocin(water broke but after 24 hrs it was necessary). Then induced at 40 weeks with my boy.. Both were natural and no pain medications. As long as you have someone there to massage, give you popsicles and encourage you to press on. Also keep in mind every birth is different.
