Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Strange noises and sucking behavior

My baby girl is coming up for 4 months. She's had a cold for a week or so - nothing major, no temperature just runny or blocked nose and occasional cough. I don't know if its related but the past few days ages been making this straining/grunting noise a lot of the time as though she's frustrated or straining to do the toilet (she's breastfeeding and has had at least one dirty nappy a day).
She's also at the stage if putting things on her mouth but when I hold her with head at my shoulder she's started trying to suck on my neck and cheek!' Anyone else out there experienced these things with their baby? Any advice! Is it just a phase that will pass???

Re: Strange noises and sucking behavior

  • I call it the constipated goat phase.  My daughter has been at this for a few weeks.  She is also BF and has no issues with pooping.  I really think she just discovered how to make the deep vocal noises and is having way to much fun.

It's quite the stage!  The looks we get when out in public heehee.

Anyways, it's totally normal, albeit weird!

  • Phew!! Thanks for that!!
  • Sounds normal to me.  Just keep a listen to the cough.  Most coughs/congestion stick around in the throat and sound worse than they are, but you need to listen to make sure it doesn't go into the chest.  I had one twin get a chest cold, but the other didn't develop that far.  We had to do a few breathing treatments for the one.  I wouldn't worry about the grunting unless she seems to be struggling with breathing.  My girsl do it and so did my son... all the time!

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • As for the sucking thing... I've gotten hicky from my daughter sucking on my collarbone, arm, etc. Totally normal for them to suck on your skin.
  • my dd went through the same.  I think her cough was due to her teething with the extra saliva and runny nose. She has been making crazy noises since around 4 mo.  She has her monster voice, her Mariah Carey voice and everything in between.  I think the voices is her trying to figure out how to speak.  You can always call her dr if you want.  If the cough sounds like its in her chest or "sick" then definitely call.  Like I said, my dd sounded like it wasn't sick but because of a drip.  When in doubt call the Dr.  There is nothing wrong with calling if you are worried.
