Vasectomy update

Hubby had his today at 1230. They gave him a Valium because he had some anxiety;) it didn't kick in though in time.
They took him in and have him a shot in the balls, he was told by the dr it was like a snap of a rubber band on the balls. His brother said no way it was like a bee sting. Hubby said rubber band was exactly what it was like. Then the dr immediately started using this "air gun" type thing and hub said that was the worst. I guess it was done with no scalpels. He said it was painful since he didn't wait at all to start.
He was given tylonal 3s, 300 mg. that's all. He's in a lot of pain if he moves at all. Ill post more if your interested later

  • Good luck to your DH.  My DH got his vasectomy when DD was 2 months old. The actual vasectomy procedure was fine.  But after a day of taking it easy and icing his jewels...they started to get VERY red and swelled up.  He went to the dr to have it checked and the dr said it should be fine.  After a few MORE days, it continued to get worse and DH went back to the Dr and then back to surgery where they almost had to remove one of his testicles because of an infection.  It was awful!  Not a good experience at all for my DH.

  • How can they do it with no scalpels?  I watch DH get his done & I can't see how it could be done without cutting?

I'm curious about this too. I'm really debating getting my tubes tied or asking H for a vasectomy. The risk of ectopic pregnancies freaks me out a tad.

There are much more serious side effects to getting tubes tied than for a vasectomy. (In a normal scenario of course). That's the only reason DH had one. :) plus its uber cheaper!!

Interesting. I never even considered the cost. I just figured with the next c/s it could be an option.

  • Yea for no more pills or condoms! Ice those babies. DH was didn't take it easy or ice his balls (you know, suck it up like a man and don't listen to the doctor=stupid idea), and they swelled up HUGE. When he went back to work on Monday it looked like he had a small pillow stuck down the front of his pants.

  • WOW. I can't believe the urologist started before the medication kicked in. When DH had his, the urologist kept sticking his balls with the needle to make sure he didn't feel anything before starting. I can't even imagine.

DH said the weird part about his was that the nurse and the doc were talking about regular, every day stuff and he was like "are you concentrating???" When we got it reversed 2 years later, he was knocked out but the recovery took a lot longer.

Hope everything goes well for your hubby!

  • I hope he's comfortable. DH has a consult in December and he's on board with having it. I'm an ass and I don't feel bad at all. I delivered 3 babies so I think he's due.

After being pregnant twice, two deliveries, and breatfeeding ds. 13 months and dd 3 so far but plan on 18 months total I understand the him feeling due. I worried I would have no sympathy but alas I do;) he was so great while I healed and I'm thankful he did the vasectomy for me instead of me doing something.
He's not keeping ice on because he says it hurts more.i got him to Ice it twice... But he IS relaxing and will continue to do so. Ill make him ice more tomorrow

It IS an option to double up your surgeries (I had c/s too so we researched it) but it made the side effects/recovery worse. Didn't want to deal with all that, a newborn and two older kids. No thank you.
