Letdown question

My LO is 10 days old and seems to choke herself when BF on one side. She will try to swallow and ends up unlatching and spitting up. Is it possible that my letdown is too quick for her ? Anyone have this issue ? Any suggestions on what to do to help her not choke ?

Re: Letdown question

  • It does sound like you have a strong letdown. You could try expressing a little milk from that side into a towel before feeding her so it's not as quick. Also, feed her more upright (I like the football position where you can raise her up a bit).

  • Lean back when you start nursing. Wok against gravity to help slow down your letdown

  • I have the same issue too, I always try to express quite a bit before feeding (if he will let me, such an impatient little guy!) and add that to my stash. I have to add that NIP sucks when this happens as I spray everywhere, plus I got DH as he was walking by one time from about 3 feet away...its a cool party trick!

  • I sometimes have this issue. I keep the breast pads right underneath her mouth as when I notice her taking in too much, I take her off and let her catch her breath. While taking her off and giving her the quick break, I hold up the pad with pressure to help calm it down a bit and dry it off enough to get her back on. She has gotten a bit more used to my letdown and it isn't happening quite as often anymore.
