Questions for EP ladies

Right now I mostly pump but still try to bf once or twice during the day. DS is getting the hang of it but I think I still mostly want to pump. Right now I maybe have enough for one extra feeding but it's more like I pump an we feed that to DS at the next feeding then we're almost put again so if I have an off session I'm SOL. How often do you ladies pump and for how long? I'm afraid I won't be able to keep up with his appetite!

  • I'm wondering this too. We are posing and feeding with nothing stored, but we are also supplementing

  • That should say we are pumping. Not posing. Stupid iPhone
  • I pump every 3-4 hours for between 20-30 minutes. This gets about 4oz per side.
When I can get him to bf, I don't bother pumping after. I got about a 6 hour stretch at night so I can get some sleep and DH will give LO a bottle.

In the beginning I was religiously pumping every 3 hours. Now that my supply is established I'm a little more flexible.
  • I'm in the same boat as you except I still am having trouble with lo bf. I pump after each feeding but use what I pump for the next feeding. We are also supplementing but usually she eats that in addition to what I've pumped. I'm curious as to what ideas others have. I'm more worried for when I go back to work so I have some time.

  • I pump every 3 hours minus a longer stretch at night. Each session I pump for 17-20 minutes (I make sure I've emptied both breasts before stopping). I pump every 3 hours aside from that break even if LO goes over 3 hours between feedings.

I've always pumped more than LO was eating so I've been able to create a pretty nice stash. I also keep about 20-30oz in the fridge (rotate freshly pumped milk) for regular daily feedings.

I am able to store about 12 extra ounces a day. Each pump session yields 6-8oz.

  • Silly question - how do you know when you've emptied a breast? Sorry, ftm here!

I thought about exclusively pumping. What is your reasoning if I may ask? Do you just not like to bf?

  • I keep my eyes on the horns. When I see that the milk has stopped flowing... I usually pump for an extra 1 to 2 minutes. This ensures the breasts are empty.

  • @AACaHa13 - we're working on getting him to bf regularly but it took him a while to latch properly and when he does bf he's there for 10min then falls asleep then is hungry an hour later. So pumping and bottle feeding seems to be a good solution right now.

  • Another tip for emptying is to switch back to the fast setting to see if you can get an additional let down before stopping. I notice that when I do that and get that final let down, my boobs feel as empty as when they nurse.

  • With Lucas, MH fed him while I pumped. If he wasn't home, I'd feed and then pump. I EP'd for 7 months and added formula just because I wanted to drop two pump sessions.

  • I recently switched to EP. LO started latching weird and taking in too much air and was really gassy and fussy. Now I know how much he is getting and switched bottle type and it has been much better. Also with a toddler it's easier.
  • My lo is almost 3 weeks old and I have had an awful time getting him to latch I have been trying nipple shield for a week and half and the lactation consultant wants me to use it for 3 more weeks! Every feeding is a constant fight with him to get latched on for 45 minutes. So then he eats then I pump and have to clean it takes almost 2 hours each feeding. I have been thinking about exclusively pumping like you all are talking about but I am feeling guilty but spending 2 hours each feeding I never leave the house and Lo is so unhappy trying to bf. if I exclusively pump how much breast milk should I give Lo each feeding.
  • My baby is 6 weeks old. I pump every 3-4 hours, never skipping a session. Your body produces how much the baby "needs" I'm getting 5-8 oz a session. I have a stock in the fridge for several feedings and store 12-18 oz a day. When we travel/ leave the house I bring a full bottle and if we're gonna be gone for more than I couple hours I bring the pump and give him what I pump. It is still a lot of work. You spend 20 minutes pumping. 10 doing dishes and then another 20 feeding the baby. We are in a good groove now. From my research ( Pinterest has several resources that lead to blogs of exclusively pumping mamas) keeping consistent for 3 months will really establish what you need. Then after that you can slack a little. Skipping a session or going awhile between them.

As for the question about how much to feed, the baby dictates. On average he eats 3oz every 2.5-3 hours. But sometimes he finishes 2 and is done. Sometimes he wants 6 or more. He eats about 30oz in a 24 hour period though (and he's a little chub! Drs are happy with his weight gain etc)

I hope that helps a little!
