Ackward...

One of my students is obsessed with my stomach. OBSESSED. First she flat out asked if she could rub my belly. No. She said "PLEASE it's almost my birthday!!" No. When I do the weekly bellwork check, she oogles my belly and stretches her hands towards my belly in a tickling motion. No! When I walk past her desk she slowly reaches her hands out to rub my belly. NO! She swears up and down that "one day" she will touch my baby belly. NO!!!!!! I keep telling her no, that it makes me uncomfortable, that it's getting ackward...agh! This is not a special needs child, just a 7th grade kid who is apparently completely transfixed by the baby belly. I refuse to be groped by my 110 students...at least she's the only one to presently show 'that' kind of interest...

I'm sorry but this cracks me up. I envisioned you having this conversation all at once and saying NO! Like "bad dog, no treats for you". Haha.

Edit: I have no idea why I quoted the post
  • @cashingn2 I ALWAYS spell it wrong, I swore spell check would get it but it failed me! Lol

@sehart3478 It is definitely a little creeper, perfect description!! She's a really nice kid, she just gets weird about the belly...I do the "bob and weave" haha

  • That is creepy!!! Definitely hands off, child!!
It's been a long road of infertility and loss for us, but we are finally expecting our Christmas miracle on December 24th!!!

  • Lol I couldn't help but laugh!! That is very creepy!!!
  • I work in an elementary school and a few kindergarteners and first graders have just reached out and touched without asking. But it's much creepier when it's a 7th grader!!!

I used to do that with pneumonia. I still have to spell it in my head really slowly lol. And seriously, can you talk to her parents? That is just too much!

I am a horrible speller I always forgot the P on Pneumonia. My teachers used to say spell it like it sounds whatever it sure doesn't sound like it needs a p to me. Plus mobile doesn't help by changing my words.

Edit: as I said mobile likes to change things
  • If it continues (because so far this exchange has been over the course of two days) I'll probably have a private convo with her (I've kind of just brushed it off so far) that it really isn't appropriate, then call mom if she doesn't get the picture.

  • This is making me laugh for some reason. I keep picturing a 7th grade creeper trying to tickle your belly.

Me too actually lol. But in all seriousness I can see how it's bothering you. If she continues tell her you will have to call home. If she continues call home. I'd also run this by the principal.
  • So glad I am not dealing with a creeoy baby bump obsessed 7th grader. I hope she knocks it off soon!
  • Totes creepy. She is going to grow up to be one of those people -- you know, the ones who try to rub your belly at the grocery store or whatever.

  • I have a group of girls in my class (lead by an 8 year old ring leader) who love talking about the baby in my tummy. They have started a new game at recess where they take their jackets/hoodies and rolling them up and saying "these are our babies". They tried it in class and I told them that they needed to take their babies to daycare after recess because babies disrupt class. I think it's cute for the most part but they haven't tried to pet my belly either. One did give me a tight hug and then jump back fast and say "OH NO! I hope I didn't squish your baby!"

7th grade is WAY more awkward. If my kids were obsessed in 7th grade I'd be more worried.

Even though I absolutely know how to spell Wednesday, I always say "Wed-Nes-Day" in my head whenever I have to use it.

  • With DS one of my students was constantly trying to grope my belly and then told me things like he was the father of my baby. No lie. Luckily I had an aide who was in the room and witnessed his weirdo behavior every day. Kids are odd.

I can relate - a lot of my previous middle school kids have been super fascinated with me being pregnant this year, & have run up to me all excited & asking questions - & yes a lot of the girls do run up & touch my belly.  Some of them ask, some don't, but surprisingly it doesn't bother me, I don't know why.  I think it bothers me more with adults, but with kids they just seem so absolutely fascinated by the idea that I just think it's cute.
  • That is totally not ok! I teach 8th grade and if one of my students kept on with the creepy grabbing attempts, I'd definitely call her parents. That's just so weird! It's like with anything else in the classroom, they shouldn't have to be told NO multiple times. Detention!!! [-X
  • Some of my kids are interested but some don't even realize haha preschool special Ed is an amazing place. One of my little girls who graduated actually noticed first touched my belly and said "baby"...coming from a 4 yr old with ASD I was in awe of her. But I think if a child is that age it's not only a little creepy but kinda strange more in the sense of what is in her mind that makes her so obsessed with your baby belly. Just seems very off I would be uncomfortable too
  • Do it back to her.  Keep trying to tickle her or touch her hair or something.
  • Creepy :S

I do the exact same thing lol

  • Weird... I wouldn't let her touch my belly either. Tell her you can't let her touch it because of the law and teacher child relationships. I was in the BBBS program and they tell you all the stuff you can't do such as letting the child sit on your lap, hugging and other " touching" related things. I'm sure being a teacher you already know this. Maybe if you pull her aside and tell her it's to protect her and yourself she will understand. If this doesn't work t would bring it to the parents and advisor/principal.
