Pregnant after 35

1st round of screenings done

I went in to get genetics counseling and screenings 2 days ago and they just called me back with the results!
T21- I am 1:700 & T18- I am 1:18,000 and the counselor said those were "good" scores and that I am on par with a 30 year old (I'm 41).
Now I have to go back in about 2 weeks to get another screening.  All of this is completely new to me and although she explained everything the other day I am curious how this works.  I guess they will be comparing the results of the 2 tests?  Either way, I am relieved at this moment (I think).  I think depending on whether she thinks it's needed, I will do the Harmony test.. just wondering if I should do it anyway.  So many tests!

Re: 1st round of screenings done

  • Wonderful news!  We jumped right to the blood test (Verifi) so I'm not sure if the results of this test affect the next one, or if they're judged independently. Our genetic counselor has been great at explaining all these things to us, even via email (that's who we coordinate all our tests though--NIPT, NT scan, quad screen, etc.--although many go directly through their OB/midwife).

  • I'm just so happy right now.. I mean anything could come up but for the anxiety level I have (and all pregnant women for sure have) any signs or good news is so meaningful.
I also was seen at my OB's office today for a monthly appt and got to see the baby kicking it's little legs.  My mind really just needs to relax in between appointments because I'm always so amazed when they go well or rather there's nothing wrong.
@jbelle I hope your results are great and would be interested in how you're doing!  I am not far behind you.. I am 12 weeks.. still working on a ticker.  All the best.

@nixie321Our Verifi results came back at 11w 1d (amazing!) and were all good; plus told us we're having a girl! Thanks for asking.

Anxiety seems to be the name of the game for pregnancy, so I'm so glad to hear you're feeling happy right now. Embrace it!

This is so out of character for me, but I've yet to get worried (well, I'm incredibly anxious about raising our daughter!). I think because I'm AMA, I've looked at more stats than I would have normally. I just can't get over how likely it is that we're going to have a healthy baby.

Well, and I suppose the fact that I'm in total denial this is even happening helps. We saw the baby for the first time yesterday and beforehand I was quite convinced the ultrasound tech was going to say, "uh, sorry, but you're not pregnant." Even seeing the baby on the screen... I can't believe that little thing is in me!

I'm guessing you have a while before your next appointment since you just had one? Hang in there; your odds are good everything will be fine!

  • Sounds great!  I hope all continues well for you.  I go in for my blood tests in two weeks, yes a little anxious for sure!
  • @kelley72 good luck to you!  Having to have tests (well it's optional but still) is really the only stressful part.  Otherwise, it should be fine!  Are you getting the NT scan? The plus side is seeing the baby again!
  • I did the quad screen and screened positive for Downs, so that part was stressful for me but I really focused on staying positive. They scheduled a level 2 ultrasound instead of the regular NT scan and everything looked great. Your odds look awesome, I wouldn't worry!

  • I go for my testing and first u/s on the 23rd. Not only am I PGAL I'm also AMA so even after I see for my own eyes that there is a baby growing in there I'll then be worried about my older eggs. There is just no winning until the baby is born. I almost want to cancel the testing because I feel it's just going to add extra stress if my numbers aren't good and there are so many false positives and even the odd false negative. When I was 27 and pg with my son the dr said I was on par with a 16 year old. Which I think is great but that was 10 years ago and I haven't always been super nice to this body. Lol. Someone needs to invent pregnancy brain off switches. :-/

Many of us ladies on here are PGALs and we understand completely. It does get easier to trust in the pregnancy as you progress and see baby growing with a strong heartbeat. At this point I simply refuse to let myself worry. Nothing but positive thoughts. Hugs!
