Cloth Diapering

NB Overnight Diaper

My DS is 3 weeks, and I estimate he weighs about 9 lbs. For the past couple of nights, he has been sleeping a lot more soundly at night and only waking enough to dream feed. We just nurse side lying in bed, so it's minimally disruptive to my sleep. However, I'm still having to get up to change his diaper (and thus usually waking him up more) at least once a night. His prefolds just cannot absorb enough otherwise.

Once DS is in our OS stash, I have great overnight solutions. Until then, does anyone have an idea of an easy overnight solution for a newborn? Should I get a small hemp insert? Put a microfiber from one of our pocket diapers under the prefold (so it doesn't touch skin)? Just use up the sposies I have at night? Any other ideas?

I really want to take advantage of DS being a good sleeper and not accustom him to nighttime wake-ups because of a wet diaper.
Mommy to N (3), J (2), and C (10 months). LO4 is due in mid-September.

My 7 week old sleeps a good 6-7 hour stretch at night. I use a Kissaluv fitted and it works wonderfully. The size zero fit since birth, she's now about 12 lbs and they're still going strong. Our prefolds in comparison wakes her up around 3 hours at night, she's very sensitive to wetness, apparently, we can only go a little over an hour during the day.

I'm glad to hear good things about these fitteds. I bought a couple for DS2. Both of my other kids slept pretty good from the get go.

  • Does your lo not poop at night?! That's lucky.

If you didn't want to buy anything I think putting a microfiber insert under the prefold is a good idea. Or you could double up on prefolds. But that would be bulky!

Do you have any os diapers to try? My guys legs were getting chunky enough at that age.

Also, if its wetness that wakes him up people have luck cutting up microfleece and place it on top of the prefold for a stay dry feeling. If the wetness is causing leaks, you'll need to do something else.

  • We had the same problem--newborn prefolds and Kissaluvs size 0s could not contain everything for us all night long (and my son never pooped at night so I hated to wake him to change his diaper if he was asleep). We found that some of our OS fitteds worked great on him at night even though they were too bulky to wear during the day--can you try out some of your OS options and see how that works? Kiwi Pie OS itteds were a great fit early on and usually lasted the night if I used both inserts. He's now just shy of 11 weeks and Sbish snapless fitteds are our most absorbent overnight diaper (I can get away with just one of the two inserts for now)--these fit him early on, as well. We also use Tots Bots fitteds with a booster placed inside and haven't had any leaks with that. I also place a prefold beneath him in bed just in case there are any leaks. He sleeps SO much better now that I stopped waking him for diaper changes!

  • I'd probably go ahead and order a hemp or bamboo doubler. It will still be useful in your OS diapers when your LO gets older. If that isn't absorbent enough, the S'bish flats worked great as an ON solution for us for a long time. They're about $10 and work great trifolded in a cover. (I'd still use them but when DS started sleeping on his belly, our PUL covers started gapping.)

  • Thank you for the responses. To answer a question: DS's nighttime bowel movements are almost gone. Last night we only had one quarter sized amount. If my suspicions are correct, we'll be ready to try these overnight solutions in a few days. That would be heavenly! :)

My LO has only pooped once a day since about 4 weeks. Weird, but according to her doc normal, especially considering how much she pees and is gaining weight. So different from my oldest daughter, that kid pooped every diaper from birth to three months, she's 19 months and just now only pooping once a day! This newest baby has been a wonderful break lol, I hope she keeps it up!

  • you could also fold up a cloth wipe or wash cloth and lay that inside the diaper, it will give you a little extra absorbancy till they fit into the bigger stuff
