Down Time at Work

I really enjoy my job (recently took a new position in the company) and my boss is great and super flexible when/if I need to leave to care for LO (sick, appointments, etc...).  The only thing is that I have a ton of down time most days, which really isn't a huge deal, I am getting paid after all, but I'm bored.  I'm pretty sure I've read just about every board on the bump at this point and my office is cleaner than my home now.  I'd so much rather spend this time with my LO.  I know this position could be done PT, or some work from home, but I'm not sure how, or if I should, even bring that up.  The woman who had the position before was always swamped, but she was promoted up, taking part of this role with her, which is part of why I'm not swamped like she was.  When I talk to DH about it, he says I should be proactive and look for things I can be helping with, but honestly, there isn't much of that available.  Just don't know what to do.  Suggestions to keep myself busy?

Re: Down Time at Work

  • I would either ask for part time or ramp yourself up. You could start new projects like a volunteer committee or something. There must be some project that would benefit the business?

There's usually something more you can do, even if it's not 100% related to your current position. A prior analyst that supported me used to complain that he didn't have enough to do - when in actuality, there was a ton that needed to be done. He didn't realize that just because it didn't fall under the normal daily work, and it was stuff that could be skipped for weeks, that it was still something he should be doing.

Talk to your manager about taking on additional roles or projects - there may be something you can or should be doing that you're missing. If you really want to go part-time, have that discussion.

But if you decide to stay full-time because you want the money, truly have nothing else to do, and if all else fails, read a book on the Kindle Cloud Reader.

When I have down time I go and help out a supervisor in a different department.  It gets me more exposure to different jobs in the company and my boss is very supportive of the crosstraining.  Plus when she goes on vacation I can cover for her and my boss doesn't have to.  So he's all for it :P

  • Ditto cross-training.  Start a committee and head it up.

  • It's not a very large office staff for opportunities to cross train, but I'll keep an eye out.  Who knows, maybe a project manager needs some help.  As it is, I was able to finally figure out the whole siggy thing today.  That's considered productive, right? :)
