Bedsharing and Nursing

So I don't personally bedshare unless DS is teething and when I do, I only have to nurse him to get him to go to sleep but I have a question for those moms that bedshare and nurse throughout the night.  Do you only feed on one side?  Or do you roll over with DS/DD and have them feed on the other side if they wake up hungry multiple times in a night?  Sorry I was just reading a thread and was wondering the logistics of it.

  • I personally flip flop him because I can't lay on one side ALL night long.  I will usually just crawl over him and lay on the other side.  I'm a belly sleeper, so I nurse with the top boob and once I feel his latch loosen, I'll pop him off...sometimes he fusses and wants it back...then we do it again.  Some nights are worse than other on the "comfort nursing". It's just a phase and he won't be this dependant for long.

  • Like PP, I switch sides throughout the night, but it has more to do with not wanting to lay on one hip all night long.

DS can nurse on both breasts no matter which side I'm laying on, though. I just shift my body so I'm leaning a bit for him to have the top boob. Some days he prefers the top boob, too. Silly kid. :P

When I'm tired of laying on one side, I'll sit up and gently scoot him to where I was laying, and lay where he was laying. Sometimes it jostles him enough that he wants to nurse, but most of the time he just stays fast asleep.

  • I flip over DD. I side sleep and nurse off the bottom boob. I'm a bit smaller in the boob department, so can't comfortably feed the top boob. Even prior to kids I couldn't make it a whole night on one side. I flip when I'm ready, or when I'm feeling engorged on the top boob.

  • I nurse with me on my back and DS on top of me.  I do try to remember to alternate sides, but it doesn't always happen.

  • I switch DD throughout the night. I lay on my back/side and she lays on her side feeding from bottom breast. If she starts to get really fidgety/fussy I may switch in the middle of a feeding because she wants more milk and doesn't want to wait for another letdown.

  • Since I try to avoid having ds between dh and I, I nurse the left side while laying on my side and nurse the right side while on my back with ds on top of me. I try avoiding putting ds between us during the night at dh's request since he is afraid of hitting or rolling onto ds in his sleep and he sleeps soundly enough that he wouldnt notice. When I want to roll freely or onto my right side, I place ds into the bassinet next to my bed though I need to decide if I want to move the crib to our room or not since ds is getting too long for the bassinet. At 6 months tomorrow, he isnt sitting or too heavy yet.
