Carrying in the back?

I keep hearing the term "carrying in the back," my MIL said she carried my husband in the back (she said she delivered in the back too, I don't know what that's about but it scares the crap out of me), and I've seen other ladies say it here.  What does that mean?  Do you gain most of your weight in your butt and not really have a large belly bump? Extra back fat?  I can't even picture in my head what that means.  Enlighten me, please!

    Uh, do they mean baby is posterior? I've never heard in the back, lol.  Your body expands forward not backward.

    Your uterus is usually either tilted forward (more likely to carry out front), or tilted back (I guess this would mean carrying in the back).

    Or...

    Some women have a bump that's all out front, and from behind you may not realize they are pregnant.
    Other women don't pop out front so much, as they seem to carry all around. So a woman that used to have a distinguishable waistline from behind is sort of rounded out instead.

    As for 'delivering in the back', I'm not sure, unless like PP said, baby was posterior (sunny side up/facing forward)?
    Or...
    She had back labour?

    I am guessing she means back labor or posterior which there is a correlation with a posterior baby and the pain that causes on the back.

    I *think* what people mean by carrying in the back is that the baby/uterus sits more toward the back than the front, so the belly doesn't pop as much. I never got truly huge when I was pregnant with my girls, in part because they were both in the 6lb range and in part because they always seemed to be trying to burrow into my spine. I assume that's what people mean by carrying in the back ;)

    And I'd assume the PPs are right about delivering in the back = back labor. Back labor is pretty much the most intense, painful, evil thing I've ever felt.
