BIG baby and fears

At 32 weeks, my baby was measuring 35 weeks....and at a following up ultrasound at 37 weeks, he was about 7lbs 12oz already and had a head measuring 40 weeks and a tummy in the 95th percentile! I'm 38 weeks now, I keep getting warned by my Dr that I may need c section because at this rate were looking at a near 10 lb baby if I go to 40 weeks. I'm terrified. If I try a natural delivery there is a risk of his shoulders getting stuck. I'm also considering that the ultrasound could be wrong, as they are notoriously wrong this late in pregnancy. Any personal stories out there??? Just interested...

  • just remember that those growth scans can be off by quite a bit, either way.

    BFP #2 - Nacho - 10/14/12, EDD 6/20/13, MMC 8 weeks, D&C 11/16/12
All testing shows both H and I are perfectly normal. Baby Nacho had triploidy.

  • My growth scan said baby was 7 lbs 10 oz, give or take a pound. She was exactly 7 lbs.
good luck and you will get through t either way!
  • I was told I will probably have a 9-10 lb baby and was scared at first, but like ravenclaw said...that's an estimate. Besides, many people deliver 9-10 lb babies vaginally. Even if you do have to have a c-section that's ok too. As long as baby comes out healthy that is all that matters. That's my mind frame at least.

  • talk to your OB.

I saw mine on Wednesday, and she said that she's starting to think that this may be a big baby. That she's out of the office next week, and when she gets back the week of the 16th, if I haven't gone into labor on my own, we'll do a u/s to check size (and then stated she doesn't like to do that because they can be wrong) and if the u/s shows big, and the fundal height shows big, she'll give me the option to induce so I can try to stick to my med-free birth plan before going straight to a planned C/S.

    just talk to your OB

  • Those estimates can be way off. Also, a small friend just had a 9lb 9oz baby med-free so don't think bigger=c section necessarily! Good luck.
  • My first was 9lb9oz. Yes, big, but no cs. I have a friend who has delivered 2 over 10 lbs, vaginally.

Assuming that your u/s is actually correct, keep in mind, you can do it!!

  • I had a post about this a few days ago! My doctor pretty much told me that if I don't go on my own in the next 2 weeks she was planning a c-section. I've decided I'm not going to schedule one. At 37+3 he was measuring at about 9lb 3oz. I'm pretty short just under 5'2" and on the petite side. I know it does happen but it is VERY rare to make a baby that will not fit at delivery! Read some on google, it really helped ease my mind. I know I can do this and was made to do this. They cannot tell by looking at you if your pelvis is too big or too small to have a baby! Try not to worry about it as much as I have been. All that matters is a healthy baby!

Hey Kelsey!  Recently just posted my similar situation as well here: https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12063411/big-baby-mamas#latest.

Like you I'm a little bit terrified also.  Will definitely be interested to see how big this baby ultimately will be.  Will post an update to let you know :)

I delivered my DS2 vaginally at 39 weeks. He was 9lbs 7ozs. I am 5'2 and petite. His delivery was easier than my DS1 who was 8lb6ozs. I did not have a growth scan. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. When they weighed him, we were all in shock.

There are always exceptions but I can't tell you how many inductions I've attended for LGA (large for gestational age) and the baby was a six or seven pounder or for IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction) where the baby was a very healthy seven or eight pounds. Like previous posters have said, our bodies usually grow what we can push out. Exceptions can be if your husband is a huge man and you're a petite woman or if the baby gets jammed in a position that makes it very difficult to delivery. Don't rely heavily on the ultrasound- after 20 weeks they have a huge margin of error. I've also seen great success with large babies and epidurals. Allowing the baby to "labor down" instead of pushing right when you reach fully dilated lets your body do a lot of the hard work. Keep the dialogue open with your MD and listen to positive birth stories! Good luck.

  • I was in the same situation as you are. My dr. didn't mention c section but did want to induce at 39 weeks. My 36 wk u/s showed him being 7 lbs 12 oz. she was worried he would end up being 11 lbs if we waited. I ended up delivering a wk and a half early when my water broke. LO came at at 9 lbs 2 oz and I would have to say it was an easy delivery-only pushed for 45 min and with an epidural didn't feel a thing!

I did have a tear and my dr. did a small episiotomy but a wk out and I feel fine down there. So it can be done. Don't let your dr. scare you into a c section if you don't want one.
  • Thanks everyone, I feel much better!!!

  • I had an u/s with DS the morning he was born and their estimate was off by a pound.  And, as a friend pointed out, even if baby weighs a lot, most of that will be squishy fat around his abdomen, cheeks, etc and won't necessarily make it any harder to push out.

I suspect that I'm growing a large baby (DS was 8 lbs 14 oz) but thankfully all my OB and midwife ever say is "looks good" or "baby's doing well."

  • My first was 9lbs 2oz and I was shocked when they said her weight because I didn't have a difficult delivery at all! I'm thinking this LO is going to be a little smaller, though.

  • I'm 5'2 and small framed and baby measured 8.5 lbs. on an ultrasound early this week. If we go to the scheduled induction date on Tuesday, he could be in the 9 lb. range.

I'm just saving my pennies for a vaginaplasty now. ;)

  • My nephew was 10 days late and measured at being near 11 lbs so they scheduled a c/s and he ended up being 9lb 6 oz. My mom vaginally delivered my brother,  also 10 days late, who was 9lb 4oz with a huge head. Have faith in yourself and good luck!

  • I was told my daughter was going to be 6 lbs at birth an she was 8lbs 11oz!! I had complications and the doctor told me good thing we decided to schedule a csection because if you hadn't you would hve ended up having one after hours of grueling labor. So my advice, if I may, go with a csection... You don't want to cause the baby to go through any duress.. I was up and walking
  • 2 days after my CS... Of course every woman is different, but I hope that everything works out in your favor! Please keep us updated on your status! When are you due?
  • My ultrasound tech said the scans are frequently off by a couple pounds as did childbirth class teacher.  Even if you do have a larger baby, it doesn't mean you will end up with a c-section.  My friend has given birth to eleven pound babies twice vaginally (and she was about 5'7" and 130 lbs pre pregnancy), so it can be done.

  • Another vote that the scans are off all the time - my dr said she wouldn't even send me in for a size scan at this point, bc I am also concerned about a large baby.

A good friend just delivered Monday - they told her to be prepared for a 9+ lb baby and he was less than 7.
  • UPDATE!!! I had my baby, he was 8lbs 15oz and I was able to avoid a c-section. I am so relieved and in love with him!!! :)
