Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Transitioning off bottle with whole milk

Anyone stop cold turkey once their child turing one?  If so, what cup did you put the milk in?? TIA!

Re: Transitioning off bottle with whole milk

  • We did the switch at 11 months.  He was starting in a new room at daycare that was "bottle free" (it's their transition room, so they spend the time there transitioning off bottles, transitioning into napping on cots, etc. before moving into the big kids room).

His first day in the class I just put milk in his straw cup (which he already drank water out of) and sent him with that (and an empty bottle for backup they could use to help transition).  When he whined for the bottle, his teacher told him that big boys drink from cups and he happily drank his milk from there.

Day 2 he refused to drink from the cup, so he got a bottle.

Day 3 he was back to the cup and he hasn't used a bottle since.

  • It took about a week to totally get DS off bottles. We only gave him bottles right before nap and bedtime anyway, so he was already used to water from the big boy cup. Some nights he refused to drink from sippie cup, so we gave in to the bottle. Then we realized he does just fine if the milk is room temp

  • We went cold turkey off the bottle just before one year. We had been giving him sippy cups with water for a few months so he knew how to drink out of it already. We started with 1/4 whole milk and 3/4 formula and then slowly increased milk/decreased formula. It was tough for a few days and seemed like he wasn't drinking much, but he picked it up. Like anything it's a transition, so just try to be patient while your LO adjusts. IMO it's easier to go off the bottle cold turkey and only offer sippy cups vs. switching back and forth between sippies and bottles. Consistently offering only sippy cups will make the transition quicker because he'll realize that that's his only option.
  • Oh, and we started with the Nuby cups with the soft spout and then moved to the Playtex cups with hard spouts. He didn't seem to have much of a preference between them- the Nuby ones were sold out at Target when I went to buy more so I just bought Playtex.
  • I switched cold turkey at 14 months to a straw cup but he was already doing well with water from a straw. It was a non issue. I pushed the milk a bit in the beginning to make sure he was drinking enough.

  • My son drinks cow's milk and water out of a sippy cup fine, but still doing formula in a bottle at naptime and bedtime. I am afraid to take away the bottle because it works so well at bedtime!

At 12 months, we started gradually adding WCM to DS's bottles and reducing the formula.  It took a few weeks and but by the end we were to all WCM with virtually no fuss from DS at all along the way.

DS was already doing straw sippies of water at home and daycare was transitioning him to milk sippies during the day, so we started doing milk sippies during the day on the weekends and that went pretty easily.  Our biggest hurdle was changing his last bottle of the night to a milk sippy.  I waited until around 15 months to do that and we just implemented that change cold turkey.  One Friday night, no more bottles!  That was slightly rougher - but still it only took a few days for him to get it.

So, we took it somewhat slow, but it worked out really well.
