Could use T's&P's for abnormal blood work

So my OB's office called me to say that my alpha-fetoprotein test came back abnormal so they are sending me to the University of South Carolina for a level 2 U/S and testing. THis is the test that screens for genetic disorders such as spina bifida, down's syndrome, etc. She said to not stress because at my age (23) it's likely a false positive. But of course I'm stressing. It makes me nervous that I have to go to a university for it. I am also freaking because there were several weeks where I didn't eat well and didn't take my vitamins due to morning sickness. I'm so scared that my negligence cause spina bifida because that's how it happens. I'm afraid they wouldn't have seen it on my U/S anyway because it was crazy fuzzy and the doc was in a major rush and skipping things. I'm also afraid to tell the PAP's because they may not want her anymore. Neither myself or the bio father have any down's in our families, so that's good. But still possible. I'd like to tell the PAP's because I feel like I really clicked with them and the wife may want to drive up for the U/S. I also don't want to stress them unnecessarily. I was thinking about calling the agency director tomorrow to see what she thinks, esp because the only way the PAP's and I are contacting right now is through email.

  • So sorry you received news that has caused concern. You have enough on your mind i'm sure.

If it helps at all to put your mind at some ease my sister got concerning neck measurements and blood work while she was pregnant with her daughter. I think the last measurement and blood work she got closer to delivery showed more promising numbers but they were still a little concerned. She was born with no spinal issues or downs syndrome. I know easier said than done, but try to not be too concerned at this point. and DO not blame yourself if there are any issues! Please. these things happen sometimes. You can do everything right and it just happens. It sounds like you're a responsible person and You're on top of your prenatal care so you're doing a great job caring for this baby.

  • Praying for you!!!! Just remember that you aren't the only one who has had horrible morning sickness - I can tell you my sister was hospitalized in her first trimester with all 3 of her children because she couldn't keep ANYTHING in her system - Hang in there :) They all resulted in 3 amazing and incredible babies who are now growing up far too fast!

  • Thoughts and prayers for you!  I think it's amazing that you feel compelled to tell the PAPs.  We just attended an appointment with our EM, and I believe they drew blood for the same tests.   We haven't heard anything back yet.  I'm not sure what our EM is willing to share with us, and I know that's her right.  Just tough.  It would probably be smart to contact your agency and see how they suggest you proceed, but you should do whatever you're comfortable doing.  Good luck!

  • Thanks everyone! The encouragement and hearing about experience with false positives have been so very helpful. At this point I feel like no matter what could possibly be "wrong" with her, she is absolutely perfect. My biggest fear is that they PAP's would back out and I'd have a hard time finding new ones because I know I can't give her what she needs. I did a conference call with the agency director and PAP's tonight, and they seemed to handle it pretty well.  The PAMom does want to come to the appointment, which I was hoping for. Can't wait to hear back from USC and get the appointment!

  • Thinking of you and praying for you. Like others have said, false positives are pretty common but I know that doesn't ease the worry. I'm glad the PAPs are willing to be there by your side.
