Transitioning from RNP to PNP/crib

So, DH and I are totally chickening out about moving the boys, who are 5 months old, out of their RNPs. However, it is probably about time since DS2 woke up on his side in the RNP this morning! He will flip onto his belly if we put him in a PNP/crib, which is what is freaking us out. Are we freaking out over nothing? Does anybody have any tips for transitioning? TIA!

Re: Transitioning from RNP to PNP/crib

  • Remind me how old they are.... Are they in your room in the RNP, or in another room? If they are in your room, then I would first transition the RNPs out of your room, then work on RNP to crib. If they are already in another room, you might want to incline the cribs a bit during transition since they are used to sleeping inclined.. The best/safest way to do that is stick a book or two under the feet of one end of the crib or PNP. Good luck!!! If he's flipping on his own onto the belly, then the rule is it's ok for him to stay there to sleep. I know it's hard to get used to and scary!

  • I don't have any tips because my LO is a year old and still in the RNP. (You can keep them in it up to 30 lbs.)  We have tried transitioning several times and he just doesn't sleep.  When he is in his crib, he gets up and plays in the middle of the night and then is exhausted and cranky the next day...even if there is nothing to play with in his crib.  The RNP keeps him strapped in.  He will sleep in the bed with us okay, but not really a habit I want to get started either.

As for the rolling, I would not worry about it so long as he is strong enough to roll back over.

This! The turning over stinks. Ds would cry every time he did it but would continue to go back to it. So after a rough week or two he finally was happy on his belly at night and no longer cried when he flipped. I feel like there is no way to prevent it since they are strong enough to roll from being propped with a blanket rolled up or whatever on their side. Just let him be :)

  • I'm no help on tips. We started LO in a bassinette and transitioned her to the crib. However when she wakes up at 4 AM (like clockwork) I put her back down in her RNP b/c I know it's the best way to get a few more hours out of her!

WHat is it about the RNP that they love? I sometimes cave and let DD sleep in hers all night because she sleeps so much better in it.....Ironically though she didn't love it when she was first born - became happier in it once she hit 4 months.

I don't know, but they do love it!  The only thing that makes me feel slightly less awful about myself is that I have a friend who transitioned her daughter from the RNP to a toddler bed...because she was a toddler.  I will get my DS out of it before he goes off to college, though.  ;)

  • I don't think I am any help either. We started G in the PNP next to our bed since I was nursing him and then just put him in his crib one night at 3 months old and that was it. He adjusted with no issues. DH was the one who was so worried. Good luck with the transition!

  • I don't know that it works for all babies, but this worked for ours: (1) From RnPs in our room to elevated PnPs in our room (2) Slowly lowered the incline on the PnPs until they were flat (3) From flat PnPs to flat cribs in their room. We kept them in the RnPs for naps until seven/eight mos when they started fighting them to flip on their bellies (DS2 actually escaped from the straps a couple of times and tried to crawl up the top). They'd also sit up in them and rock them in a scary way! I moved them to their cribs one nap at a time and they actually slept so much better!

Best of luck with the transition. It ended up being NBD in our case.

  • At that age they are going to start rolling and tummy sleeping. I know I felt better once I was sure LO could roll the other way. As for the transition to crib, you're going to have to just bite the bullet as you say. I know all of our transitions ended up going better than I expected so while it might be a few nights of upset they will eventually settle in. GL
