Milk storage-how much per bag?

How much do you store in each bag or bottle that you freeze? So far I've been freezing about 3.5oz at a time but I always second guess myself if I should do more or less or do a variation. According to Kelly mom it estimates baby eating 2.5-3.5 oz per feeding.

Re: Milk storage-how much per bag?

  • I've done all different amounts but usually 4 ounces. Some 2 ounce portions but mostly larger since they can be used throughout the day at daycare.

  • I have a variety.  3oz, 4oz, 5oz, and 6oz bags.  It basically depends on what I get pumping that day.

  • I never freeze more in one bag than can be used in one bottle...starting out 2 maybe three oz, later, no more than 4

  • I started doing 4oz bags but now I'm up to 6oz per bag.
    A) I feel like 2oz per bag is a waste.
    B) whatever isn't used at the first feeding will be used at the next so nothing is being wasted.
    C) when I plan on breaking into my stash Lo will probably be eating close to 6oz. He's already at 4.

  • So this is a stupid question. I've been just pumping after LO is done eating, so I only get an ounce or so.. What is the safest way to combine it so I'm not wasting bags? I'm so nervous I'll mess up and make him sick.
  • @k4maynes, there was a post about this yesterday you can check out that may be helpful.  I just keep it in a bottle in the fridge and add to it as I pump throughout day, then freeze at the end of the day.

  • I usually do 2-3 oz per bag. Sometimes DH just needs to give DS a couple ounces to hold him over until I get home and I hate to waste even an ounce.

Thanks! Sorry I hadn't seen the post from yesterday!
  • I learned my lesson from DS and only freeze milk in 2-3oz bags as it helps minimize any wasted milk. I would rotate my stash as mentioned previously. I was able to keep up for the most part and use fresh milk but used my stash mostly for a bottle here and there on the weekends and when needed during the week. DS never took a bottle bigger than 4oz he was usually satisfied with 3.5 oz so larger bags a lot of times had wasted milk or I would have to pump so we could offer a second bottle of frozen milk. Can I mention how much I hated pumping when it was necessary!

  • I also freeze in 4oz and 2 oz increments. If I have leftover or can't get to one of those, I wait until the next session to freeze. BFd babies won't (normally) take any more than 6 oz at a time. Also, LO may or may not space out their feedings as they get older. In my case DD1 ate around the clock every 3-4 hours for the whole first year.

  • I'm doing mostly 2 and 3 oz at a time with a few 1 oz bags just to round things out b

  • I did 2 oz per bag.

  • 2-6oz at a time, but I may change that after reading this thread.
