White glow on picture, cancer?

Has anyone seen this yet?  This little girl was diagnosed with a retinoblastoma, but turns out there was an obvious sign much earlier.  Five months before diagnosis, her mom took a picture and noticed a white glow in her eye.  It was actually the camera flashing off of the tumor.  The story states that 1 in 80 kids can have this glow signifying different eye diseases.  Something to keep in mind!

  • I had heard this before but it has to be a straight on, fairly close up picture.  If it's from the side or far away it can give a false white reflection.

Yep, I'd definitely think so.  I looked at some pics of C and if he had his eyes narrowed at all, you could see a white reflection, but it didn't look at all like the pic in the link.

  • crazy.  cant believe an indicator like this is not public knowledge.  glad they did the story.
  • I heard about this a few years back on another board I'm on (before having kids), but totally forgot about it. Yeah, I'll be checking my pics now!

  • My cousin's daughter had retinoblastoma and lost her eye  :(   This is interesting, definitely something to keep in mind, but the 1st symptoms she had were persistent eye redness and watering, and then some bulging of the eyeball.  Luckily she's cancer-free now, and her recent MRI was all clear!

I'm so sorry to hear that.  :-(  Glad she is otherwise doing well though.  C had a lot of watering in one eye and eventually have the tear duct probing done.  The dr looked carefully for eye bulging now that I recall so guess this is what he was checking for.
