Solids!

I just took LO in for her four month check-up.  The doctor said it was time for solids, but wait a few days because of the vaccines.  I was surprised by this, but understood her reasoning - we wait too long and they get allergies.  However, everything I have read says six months.  What are others finding?  Is this normal?  Has your ped said they same thing?

Not true.  Sigh... the amount of misinformation out there is crazy.

  • I hate how there is so much conflicting information! One site I read said to give baby fruit before bm or formula at a feeding, but I always thought that solids were just for fun before one. So why have them fill up on a solid first? I plan on BLW also... after 6 mo...

  • Our docs talk about solids at the four month visit, but say to introduce when we are ready. As others have said, BM or formula should still be the primary source of nutrition.

I'm def not as gung ho to intro solids this time around, and will be waiting until 6+ months. It's kind of a pain to always have baby friendly food on hand once the kid starts expecting it, purées are messy to feed on the go, it's so much easier to just nurse her while thats still an option.

  • +1 to everyone saying that 4 months is too early to start solids.
It was my understanding that your LO should be able to sit in their high chair on their own before starting solids as well. FWIW

  • Four months is still acceptable in some circles but I really think it's better to wait.  And to touch on something that another poster mentioned, food before one IS for fun and exposure to tastes and textures so it should be given after a bottle or in the span of time between bottles.  It shouldn't be given first because you're right, they'll fill up on it.  The amount of solids they're able to consume in one sitting is enough for them to feel full but doesn't come anywhere close to providing the caloric value they need and would be missing out on if they're too full to drink their normal amount of BM/formula.

  • My understanding was that introducing solids too early increases the likelihood of allergies developing. I think the only exception to this rule is peanut butter. I think that originally they thought that introducing peanut butter at 2 years would decrease the likelihood of a peanut allergy but it increased it.

  • I am waiting until 6 months or later to introduce puree. I am not going the BLW thing though. I will introduce veggies first, then fruits, then solids like finger foods ( cheerios ect..) after about 9 or so months.

DS1 took puree and solids pretty simple.
DS2 refused all puree and solids. He was breastfed almost exclusively for 18 months. He started to become interested in table food at the age of 1.
I will let Owen tell me when he's ready, and I am not going to force it on him.

I read though that even introducing at 4 months is still okay. If you trust your pedi- and you think your LO is ready, then maybe try it. Otherwise, if you feel like you need to wait, and your LO isn't ready...it's okay to wait also. Your mama...you do what you do with your LO.

  • I'm not sure what my pedi recommends..although I have a friend that uses the same Dr and she was told that by her 8 or 9mo check up her daughter needed to be consuming more calories from solids. I'm not sure what"more" is compared to.

However, I'm not looking forward to potentially arguing with the pedi if she recommends them at 4 mo.

I'm not sure if I'm doing blw yet but either way, I will not do solids before 6mo.

Not until 6m. It doesn't matter what her pedi recommends; I've done my own research and won't start until 6m. Just like I don't do vitamins despite pedis suggestion. :)

  • I'm waiting until 6 months. Medical/dietary considerations aside, solids are a hassle.

  • Ok so I was all about waiting until 6+ months but just read a study that found that the risks of getting type one diabetes goes way down if solids are introduced between 4-6 months. Now, this is for babies who are already at risk (my brother has type 1). The study had a lot of info but the main message was the risk goes way down if food is intro'd between 4-6 months... So needless to say I will be discussing with my pedi because I really didn't want to intro solids before 6 months.

@kellen&estevan Will you send me a link to that study?  Is it a well done study? I've never heard of this. It's probably multifactorial.  I'm wondering if it's an association, but not a causal study.

  • Six months and skip infant cereal.  That seems to be the predominant recommendation from medical professionals.

DD #1 wasn't ready for solids at 6 months.  She was at least 7 months before she lost the tongue thrust reflex and really started eating solids regularly.

I found the article, but it requires registering for JAMA to view the entire thing, so I can't see if it was a well done study.  The paper was just published in July, so it's pretty new.

Yeah the actual article I read was in a magazine but thanks for checking into it... I'll bring it up with my pedi since its such new info.

  • Four months is only a few weeks away and B is nowhere near ready.  Oh hell no.
  • 4 months old is too early for solids. We'll see what happens, but I'm not planning to offer solids to LO until she shows interest in what we're eating. If that doesn't happen until she's 15 months old, so be it (though I think the odds are pretty low on that).
  • Sorry I never had a chance to respond yesterday - LO had a procedure and we were at the hospital all day - which is just one more reason I didn't want to change anything right away!  But thanks everyone for confirming what I felt, everyone!  I was shocked that the doctor recommended it, and I will get a second opinion.  She told me she would compromise with me at 5 months since LO had a procedure yesterday, is starting day care Monday, and was 6 weeks early!  Still, I had no plans to do anything before six months for sure.

@skio - I agree with you about the vitamin thing.  I asked my ped about giving LO vitamins again at this appointment, and she said to keep doing it. I feel like I shouldn't need to but have found so much conflicting info online.  Do you have any links worth sharing?

  • We introduced banana and sweet potato at 4 months with G because he was starving. I was still nursing constantly and needed a break to get longer stretches and G loved solids from the start. Ds2 is following the same pattern so although I would like to wait until 6 months, if he is into non cereal solids at 4 months we will start then. Every baby is different and I was originally dead set on at least 6 months as a first time mom but things took another course and when I saw how happy he was with more food and how I finally got some sleep I went with it!

  • I will go with whatever my pedi says. With DS1 everyone I knew started solids at 4 mos, but our pedi delayed us til 6 mos because DS1 was a preemie and had a dairy allergy. He did great.

DS2 was not a preemie and does not have any allergies, but he's actually smaller than DS1 was at this age and isn't gaining a ton ...(he's also on BM and DS1 was on formula).

Anyway, like I said I will discuss with our pedi and go from there. Anywhere between 4-6 months to start sounds fine with me!

  • We haven't had the four month appt yet, but the pedi and I randomly got on the conversation of food introduction at his 2 month appointment- she led me to believe that starting solids at 4 months would only be for specific circumstances. But, every kid is different and there surely isn't a set date for any of the milestones they will experience.
