Sinus pressure/infection

I think I'm coming down with a sinus infection.  Lots and lots of pressure, yuck. Anyone had one while pregnant so far? What could you take? I have some Fluticasone steroid spray from my last one, but I don't know if I can take it or not. I have a call into my OB about it, but curious if you had one, what you did. It's starting to really bug me!

Re: Sinus pressure/infection

  • I haven't had a sinus infection while pregnant yet - but lots of sinus headaches. Neti pot!!
  • Loading the player...
  • I'm pretty sure that's what I've got. Started yesterday and today is full on blocked nose and amazing pressure behind my nose/eyes!!! Would love to know what can be taken as I can't get in to my Dr until next Tuesday :(
  • Yup I had it and suspect I still have it. So far nothing that ob recommended helped. Going to ask during my appointment next Tuesday. Ask your ob what they recommend before you take anything.
  • I've had chronic sinusitis for years. Tylenol sinus has been the only med to help with pain. Now that I'm pregnant, heating pad on my forehead is the only thing, or a hot shower. I've tried neti pot and a million nasal sprays, otc and rx, and nothing can get rid of it. So if you find a cure please let me know.
  • As soon as I feel one coming on, I use saline spray. It doesn't always help, but it usually fixes at least some of the pressure.

  • My doctor told me told take Zyrtec (or generic) for allergy symptoms. It's a once-a-day pill but boy it clears it up and if I skip a day I am mis-er-a-ble!!!

  • I am taking fluticazone daily but do check with you OB to make sure you don't need antibiotics.

  • The only things that allowed me to function when I had once this month was 2x a day Neil Med sinus rinse, Tylenol around the clock, and I took sudafed twice.

    Hope you feel better soon.

  • Talked to my dad who is an OBGYN. He said I can take the Flonase steroid spray and also Tylenol Sinus. I am doing a sinus rinse, but for some reason that always makes me feel worse, it does something to the pressure behind my ears :(

  • If it's a bacterial infection, they usually give (for me) the wonderful Z-pack (azythromycin). I've needed it for 2 ear infections while pregnant, and mastitis. (and other non-pregnant infections)

  • There is an over the counter treatment called a neti pot that relieves the sinuses and is completely safe for pregnancy. Also try steaming, this is an old remedy but it works. I have had pregnancy related sinusitis this whole pregnancy and this helps me.

I was just going to say that I can do the sinus rinse when I'm slightly congested but when I already have an infection or severe congestion it makes it worse!

Also, I took steroidal nasal spray several times last pregnancy during hay fever height with Ob's ok.

The Neti Pot. I hate doing it, but it really does work!
ETA: I hope you feel better! Sinus issues are the worst.

I feel your pain, it's horrible when pregnant! I had a similar thing a week or so ago. My OB suggested to use the saline spray, but my general doctor told me I'm fine to use a stronger spray before sleep to get a good rest but only once a day, for 2 days. It gave me huge relief and allowed me to sleep and recuperate. Also tylenol can help take the edge off. I hope you feel better soon!
