XP from Breastfeeding

Just when I felt like things were evening out - milk coming in, girls latching better, etc - I seem to have had a supply drop, my nipples are killing me, and I can't figure out how to nurse each girl each feeding (had been nursing one, giving the other a bottle before and then switching next feed). Help?

Re: XP from Breastfeeding

  • @sing4mysavior - nope, just raw from "over" use :). We'd been supplementing with bottles and have recently decreased the amount of supplementing, thus increasing the amount of on breast feeding.

  • what makes you say that your supply is less?  its normal to be less full feeling, and be able to pump less as your supply regulates.

  • Do you think your supply has dropped due to more frequent nursing? There is typically a growth spurt around 6 weeks, so that would explain it. If you are wanting to maintain your supply, I would just keep those girlies on the boob as much as possible (aka all the time at this age, sorry). Are you tandem feeding?

  • I agree with PP that your breasts just don't feel as full after a few weeks - but continue to trust in your body's abilities. Feed babies on cue around the clock and in the early weeks when in doubt give em the boob. Once their mouths get a little bigger and they get a little more clued in to how this works you'll barely remember those overworked red nips. Just keep swimming!

  • Could also mean they're not latching properly - can you check that?

  • I would go see a LC and they can see how much the kids are actually getting when you nurse and help with latch issues. Hang in there!

  • I agree that going to see a LC would be a great idea. I don't remember what was in it but when I had super sore nipples from over use they suggested a cream mixture called "triple nipple cream" and it was AMAZING and totally safe for the babies. It couldn't hurt. Worse comes to worse hopefully before long this will all be nothing but a memory. Good luck!

  • Are you taking any supplements yourself?  I take a LOT of fenugreek - 4 pills in the morning and evening, and three mid-day, plus one blessed thistle pill with each.  If you're worried about supply it's an easy thing to do to help boost it a little.

  • Thanks all. We are working with an LC, I'm taking fenugreek and Domperidone. I was hoping for more in the trenches experience re juggling feeding 2, pumping, and trying to get out of the house on occasion :)

  • I EBFed my boys. I hated pumping with a passion and found it easier to just nurse both. I would do one baby per side each feeding. At the beginning my boys had poor latch so I found it difficult to tandem nurse. If your twins latch well I would really try to get the hang of tandem nursing.

As for getting out, BFing is great for that. No need to pack bottles and formula. I preferred privacy for tandem nursing, so I often used fitting rooms in stores or the nursing room at BRU. As they got older and became really fast at nursing I found it easier to feed them one at a time. Then I used a drape and nursed wherever.

Hang in there. The beginning is hard but it's definitely worth it.
