Rolling onto belly at night

I know this has been mentioned, but I can't remember what everyone said they did. LO is now rolling from back to belly, but not so much belly to back. At night in the crib he's rolling onto his belly, but his face is not turned to the side. Both times I caught him he was face planted into the mattress, so I rolled him onto his back. This makes me nervous - what if I'm sleeping and miss it? What do you all do when LO does this? Should I not worry so much? He does have great head control and is able to lift his head really well, im hoping that matters? I'm kinda freakin out about this one...

Re: Rolling onto belly at night

  • It is usually a short time period before they start rolling the other direction.  It will happen, usually they cry for you to come move them.  If they don't then this is a main reason to have no extra blankets, or toys or padding of any sort in the bed.  With a firm mattress and sheet even face down baby can breathe.  My daughter LOVES being face down in anything she can.  Drives me bonkers...all I can do is make it safest for when she does!

  • This freaked me out, as well. I positioned DD towards the front of her crib. She has enough room to roll to her side (which is how she sleeps now) but can't get all the way over because the front of the crib is right there.
  • I didn't sleep for about 1 1/2 when this started. My dh actually told me I was going insane.  I was so worried that she would roll onto her belly and not turn her head to the side or be able to roll over.  She learned how to turn her head quickly, thankfully.  It helped once she learned that but I finally was able to relax once she started rolling back over on her own.  I still check to make sure I see an ear when she is on her belly but I know she is ok. It is scary but it will be ok.  Once they have full control of their head/neck you shouldn't have to worry (even though we do!)

  • Honestly that's what I used the magic sleep suit! Ha!

B was able to roll onto his belly before he could roll the other way consistently and I didn't want him to roll in the night and get stuck or mad so I kept him in the suit until he could roll both way easily and when he started to get mad because he wanted to sleep on his belly and started waking up 4 times a night trying to get there!
