Cervical Checks

So I went to the MFM today for my 2nd tri appt and I said the one thing I was concerned with was the lack of cervical checks.  He said that there was really no point in knowing the length of the cervix because there is nothing that can be done to prevent it???  He said that if I had a short measurement the only thing it would do is make me worry.  Does this seem right?  I like him but this seems off to me.  I'm in Pittsburgh and we have an wonderful MFM group here through Magee Womens Hospital, which is one of the leading hospitals for ob in the country.  I'm just not sure what to think!!!  Thanks for your input!

Re: Cervical Checks

  • Mine stared doing cervical checks at 24 weeks and will continue at each appt until 32 weeks.  At that point they start to do internal cervical checks.

  • I get a cervical length check every 2 weeks and have since about 16 weeks. I am not sure what the standard of care is, but I personally would like to know if there was something to be worried about.  The ignorance is bliss rationale would make me worry 1000x more!

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!
  • i started getting them 2 weeks ago at 16 weeks and got another one yesterday at 18 weeks.  my MFM said i won't get them at every u/s because they can't do much at this stage if it is shortening.  I think knowing it makes me more nervous because my 16 week ws 5.4 and 18 week was 3.9.  She said both are normal and they don't worry unless it goes down to under 2.

  • I got my first one at my a/s at 19w.  It was good that I did because I ended up having a shortening cervix.  I am on moderate bed rest and progesterone with weekly ultrasounds until 28w.  After that I'll get one more at 30w and then I believe they stop for fear of irritating cervix and causing PTL. I did have to ask for the first check and continue to be my own advocate.  I learned from other ladies on this board as well as the high risk board.

  • I got my first cervix check done at 22 weeks because my mfm saw that it was looking like a V a little during a routine ultrasound. When he checked it was 1.6 so very short. I've been going once a week since then to get it checked and its currently at a 1. Next week will be my last week going every week because after that its suppose to naturally shorten and they don't want to irritate it. It's true they can't really stop it from shortening but there's things you can do to help not continue to shorten and slow it down. I'm on bed rest, blood pressure meds and progesterone supplements.
  • I have had 2, with the last being just last week, but I had to ask both times at my MFM. When I was going to my OB, she did them every time. My MFM says that since there is no history of cervical issues, it should be fine....I am going to keep asking! I thought it was odd too that they didnt do them.

  • There is a lot of new research/protocol around cervical length/checking/bed rest, etc. so it sounds like your MFM is of the non-bed rest, thus no need to check camp. I tend to disagree with this since I firmly believe my 14 weeks of bed rest kept my girls in, but many people disagree. I'm sorry you have to deal with this.
