Separate bedrooms? At what age?

My g/g twins are turning one this week! While I am marveling at the crazy 20 months it has been since I found out I was pregnant with twins and then since their birth, I am also starting to look ahead. We have a three-bedroom house and have the girls in one room right now. We do have some bed-time and sleeping issues with trying to get our more rambunctious girl to sleep and to stay asleep without waking up her calmer sister. I think it is too early to separate them, but I'm not sure. Do any MoMs have any advice about when (if ever) to put twins in different rooms?

Re: Separate bedrooms? At what age?

  • We are in the same boat!! I have B/G one year old babies.  We're debating on separating their rooms.  There are so many pros about keeping them together, but right now, because of the lack of sleep (both LOs and DH and I) we're strongly considering splitting them up.  I think if eventually you want to split them, it might be better to start before they move to beds.

  • Unfortunately there is no way we'll be able to split our girls up unless we move to a bigger house, so no pertinent advice here!  I would suggest doing it when there are no other big changes being made within a few months in either direction of the split (ie - crib to bed, potty training, arrival of a new sibling, etc).  That way they can adjust to one big change at a time.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • We had an additional bedroom, but didn't separate them until we moved when they were 5. My twins are b/g. They enjoyed sharing a room, but were excited to have their own space.

  • Mine aren't here yet, but we plan on seperate bedrooms once they are in big girl beds...hopefully they wont be so used to being together that it will be difficult...time will tell :)

  • My boys will be 5 in January. We have always lived in a 2BR place ... until Saturday, when we finally bought a house! 3 BR plus a bonus room. Originally I wanted to put the boys in one room and make the other bedroom a play room, but I think my boys' sleep needs have diverged a lot in the past 6 months or so. One of my boys has been fatiguing very easily to the point that his drs are concerned, have run blood work, etc. Before they go on to more invasive testing, we wanted to first see if it was simply that he now needs a lot more sleep than his brother. We finally are able to test that theory.

So far I haven't noticed a difference in his energy level, but it's been less than a week. He is loving having his own space though, that's for sure! I think our other (high-energy, more extroverted) son is struggling more with getting lonely, since he's used to always sharing a bedroom with his brother. But overall so far it's been a relatively smooth transition, and there have been a lot fewer bedtime shenanigans with them in separate rooms!
