Going into labor before scheduled c/s

How likely is this to happen?

I am being scheduled for 38 weeks.
My previous c/s was at 37 due to medical issues but I never went into labor

Re: Going into labor before scheduled c/s

  • Not sure of the likelihood, but I was scheduled for 39 w1d, and contractions started which resulted in my section two days early..

  • Happened to me in both my c sections. Having another one in a few weeks and I'm not expecting to make it but because I'm prepared not to, I probably will. I don't know actual stats on this but I feel like most of my friends make it. My babies were born at 36 and 37 weeks for no known reason and my doctor doesn't think it has any affect on when this one will come.
  • DS1 born at 37w5d (went into spontaneous labor - vaginal delivery).

2nd pg was twins, I went into PTL at 32w4d, stopped contractions and I still made it to my c/s at 38w.

My last pg I finally had a RCS at 41w because he showed NO signs of coming and my OB didn't feel safe leaving him in any longer.

I didn't expect to make it to my c/s with my twins, I was sure I wouldn't.

  • I have no idea how likely it is, but my water broke five days before my scheduled RCS.  I was induced with DD (ended up with emergency c/s) at 41+ weeks with no sign of progress, so I was shocked when I went into labor early the second time around.  But no big deal, I just showered, went to the hospital, and had DS a few hours later, once the surgical team was assembled.

  • Thanks for the feedback.

I have wondered if I'd be more likely to go into labor before 38 weeks specifically because my first baby was delivered at 37 but from what I hear, thats it's not an indicator.
  • Had both CS's before the scheduled dates.  My water broke 3 days prior to the scheduled date for DD (had her at 39w3d), then after laboring unsuccessfully, went forward with the CS.

DS was going to be an RCS, no VBAC attempts due to time between pregnancies, age, and reason for first CS.  I started dilating at 36 weeks, and at exactly 38w, I was 3cm and fully effaced, so to avoid going into active labor, which was the next step, we pushed up the RCS to that day.

  • I was scheduled at 39w w/ DD. Ironically, the morning I went in for C/S, I was in labor from being on the go so much the day and night before prepping for baby to be there. Went ahead with C/S and absolutely did not regret it!
  • Our first was a vaginal delivery at 36 weeks. Second was an emergency c/s at 37. This guy (currently 38+3) doesn't seem to care how early his sibs were. If he comes before the RCS next Friday, I'll eat my shirt. He's tucked way up high and I don't feel much progress at all. I have a contraction here or there but nothing significant. I was even in L&D last Saturday with strong contractions, 4-5 minutes apart and never dilated past a fingertip. Nope, this little man is in it for the long haul! ;)

  • I was scheduled at 39w5d and was worried about this too. My doctor reassured me that this isn't a bad thing, that labouring could actually be beneficial for baby. The contractions help squeeze fluid out of baby's lungs, and the natural cascade of hormones might be important developmentally. In the end it didn't happen though, I made it to my scheduled date. Good luck!

  • I went into labor early with both (DD was 12 days early, DS 21 days early);  it happens--neither were a big deal
