SPD

Symphysis Pubis Disfunction.

Who has been diagnosed with this awful thing?

My OB told me I could go to physical therapy, but essentially it wouldn't help much. He said they'd align my pelvis, but because everything is so loose in pregnancy, it would just separate again. :-/

If its still bothering me after delivery, I plan to go then.

How are you other (if there are any) ladies dealing?

Re: SPD

  • I had illiosacral joint dysfunction so similar but it is in the back of my hips. I have adjusted the way I sleep and I stretch and do yoga everyday and it has seemed to relieve a lot of the pain. I used these stretches in the beginning and they really helped: https://birthbliss.wordpress.com/2013/04/08/yoga-poses-and-exercises-to-help-ease-pain-from-pubic-symphysis-dysfunction/

Also releasing and strengthening your psoas muscles can help. This is from spinningbabies.com:

    Technique: Psoas Release
Why? A tight psoas (so-as) muscle pair keeps baby high. A long labor can relax the psoas, as may an epidural, but why not improve your body's balance by relaxing your psoas in pregnancy.

Who does this? The mother herself.

How? Lie on your back with your feet on a chair so that your calves are at a 90 degree angle to your thighs. Thighs are straight up and down and calves are horizontal. After five minutes, roll to your side and get up slowly.

One day you will notice that your lower back relaxes enough so that the space between your lower back and the floor disappears. Don't force your lower back to touch the floor, wait till it happens on its own. Then repeat this technique occasionally. Before that, do it daily as much as you can, but for five minutes at a time.

    How long? 5 minutes.

    How frequent? Every day.

  • Yup, in front and back. I've been seeing a chiropractor which helps a bit but doesn't completely eliminate it - he realigns my pelvis each time I see him but after a couple of days it just slips back out of place. My midwife told me I can put ice on it, which feels good, but LO doesn't like the ice pack very much!

I've kind of resigned myself to waddling and not getting around very well until after baby comes!

  • Chiming in....yep :(

I should have gone to the PT/Spine specialist, but with only about 6 weeks to go I just didn't see how I could fit it in.

I'm doing my own therapy in our indoor pool (neighborhood) That's nice---it takes a lot of the pressure off and just generally trying to watch my movements.

I really did myself in a few times being on my feet too long and certainly paid for it afterwards.
