rash wwyd?

Emily has a rash in her diaper area.  It doesn't look like regular diaper rash, but doesn't really look like yeast either.  It's mostly just four or five red spots, kind of like what you would expect with chicken pox.  Her skin seems a little more sensitive than usual, and if I don't keep her slathered in Desitin, she gets regular diaper rash along with it.  It's been there a few days, and I'm not sure if it's something to take her to the doctor over or not.  We go diaper free at least a little every day, so I guess it's possible something bit her.

I was thinking I'd give it another day or so to clear up, but when I put her in her carseat, the buckle between her legs presses into it a little and she makes her uncomfortable face/noises.  Before that I didn't realize it was bothering her at all, so now I'm wondering if I should take her in to the pedi sooner.

Would you take her in today/tomorrow or give it until Monday to see if it clears up?

Re: rash wwyd?

  • She did have a yeast infection recently (well, that's what they suggested over the phone).  The cream did seem to clear that up, but the problem is that using it aggravated her skin and she got pretty bad diaper rash.  Maybe what I'll do is pick up a different kind of cream today and try it, just to see if it is yeast and maybe a different cream won't hurt her skin.

  • Have you tried coconut oil? Maybe try a bit on a small area of her skin first to make sure it doesn't cause a reaction.

You may want to take her in to get it checked out. I've also have had good luck with some anti-fungal cream to clear up E's diaper rashes per our Pedi. We use like Lamotrin or Tenactin (or the walgreen brand :)  )

This.  Our pedi recommends the Lamotrin for the yeast infections.  If it doesn't clear up in a couple of says she will give a prescription cream.
  • My derm said to try Hydrocortisone cream and anti-fungal to see if either helps.  I have used both in the same day alternating each cream, but only use both twice to three times per day depending on the instructions on tube.

Example: Put Hydro on at first morning diaper change.  Put anti-fungal on at next change and so on.  I usually left the Hydro on overnight because that seems to help calm the skin overall.

Good luck to you and keep us posted.  Sorry your little Em is experiencing this!

Thank you!  I will try this combo tomorrow.

  • @wheelerc, I wondered the same thing, but we haven't changed anything except for putting the yeast cream on her.  Maybe she had a reaction to that?  But it's been a while, shouldn't it have cleared up if that was the culprit?

I don't know...is it possible she's developed an allergy to the wipes or diapers we've always used?  If so, wouldn't that be everywhere they touched, not just on her genitals?  I'm so confused.  If the hydrocortisone and yeast cream combo don't clear it up, I'm going to take her to the pedi.  I'm just befuddled at this point.
