I went to a hen do last weekend, and basically had to end up telling the hostess (the bride is a good friend and already knew). I didn't want to get caught up in drinking games.
You could try to claim a hangover from the night before, or claim to be taking antibiotics for an unspecified condition (except really, a lot of antibiotics are fine to take while drinking, so you could get called out on it). You could always mix your own drink, and make it look like alcohol (sprite + lime looks an awful lot like G&T). Or get a bottle of beer then empty it out in the bathroom and fill it back up with water.
You could also say that you're trying a new sleep medication and aren't supposed to drink for a specified time. I personally like the hangover idea PP mentioned. You could say, also, that you have an upset stomach (but you'd have to be careful about what you eat to stick to that).
Thing in the hen is also my boss so I can't tell her just yet, I'm thinking of pulling out so I don't have to make excuses not to drink. Work mates know we are/were ttc after mc in may, I'm so excited about pregnancy hate keeping it a secret x
I don't think you owe anyone an excuse or "reason." A lot of people will (and should) accept "no thanks" as a response and not pressure you to drink if you dont feel like it. You are probably hyper aware of being pregnant and knowing that it is a secret, so you think anything will give it away. There are plenty of drinkers that just choose water some nights. If you feel you need to explain, maybe focus on a symptom that you have and say you need to drink water because you've had a headache, stomach ache, dehydration, ext. Those are normal things that happen to everyone and people shouldn't think twice, and if they do then that is a bummer that people can be so nosy and suspicious. I hope it goes well.
We had guests in town this weekend and we not very far along. I let people make drinks for me and then emptied them in sinks as I passed by. Also, I made my own and when people asked what I was having I said vodka and diet - even though it was just coke.
I told friends that I was taking an antibiotic for an abscessed tooth. One of the friends I was with is a nurse so I checked with my sister, who is a pharmacist, for a good antibiotic story that wouldn't be challenged. This way I didn't have to pretend to be drinking.
You could also claim that you have something important to do the next day early in the morning (like meet your in-laws for breakfast!) so you're taking it easy tonight.
I wouldn't pull out of going just because of this.

I would do this. I know you should be able to just come out and say you aren't drinking that night, but honestly if a friend who always previously drank (even just wine or a sip of beer) said this I would think something was up. Bc if you use the excuse of something important the next morning I would wonder what in the world would be wrong with one little glass of wine at dinner.
Use this excuse and you don't have to fake sick and/or come up with all these other crazy reasons why. It's the safest bet in my opinion.
I am a big drinker and with my first pregnancy I used the DD excuse and i still got some funny looks. This time around I would probably use the antibiotic or some type of medication excuse. I know we don't owe anyone an excuse and people shouldn't be pushy, but like I said it is VERY uncharacteristic for me to not have a drink at a social event. I also bought non-alcoholic beer to take to a party and poured it into a glass so nobody saw the labels.
I had a margarita night out when I first found out I was pg. I just had mine in my glass and pretended to sip through the straw all night. Hold a glass of wine in your hand and bring it up to your lips every once in a while. Don't really drink it, and just empty it out when you go to the bathroom or something.
No one will notice that you aren't really drinking it.
My advice is to fake drink. I am in the same situation where I always drink in social situations and would never turn down a drink at a bachelorette party. If I started turning down drinks because of antibiotics people would know right away what's up, but I'm not about to stop going to social events just because I'm pregnant. Try to find out what drinks they will be serving and that will help you out.
If it's a wine kind of event, buy some non alcoholic wine and some real
wine with a twist off. Switch the non-alcoholic wine into the other
wine bottle and screw the lid back on. Just make sure you are the one to open the bottle so people don't notice it's already been opened.
If
it's mixed drinks, try to make your own drink and don't add any
alcohol. If it's a signature drink it's a little bit harder. Your best bet is to stand around with the glass and periodically pour some down the drain in the bathroom. After having one it might be acceptable to switch to another type of drink that is easier to fake.
If it's beer event bring beer in cans and then fake drink out of the can all night or replace the beer with something non-alcoholic. No one will be able to see what or how much is in your can. This also works with dark bottles although people can see how much is in your bottle. Or if people are drinking beer out of glasses you can hide some apple juice in your bag and when no one's looking pour out the beer and replace with apple juice. I've done this and it works remarkably well.
If you end up at a bar, just tell the bartender to make you virgin drinks, in my experience bartenders are more than happy to help you hide your little secret! Good luck!!

I went into the whole women's lib rant recently when a friend pressed. My question to her: When a man decides to take a break from drinking, everyone's fine with it because it's his choice. When a woman does the same, she MUST be pregnant or have a "legit" reason -- why? Are we still living in the 1900s??? It silenced everyone and I didn't have to lie.

I am in my first trimester and have used several of these tactics over the last few weeks! I've emptied beers and filled them with water, brought apple juice to fill up my wine glass, and flat out just said no when someone offers me a drink. I will say I spent a good junk of some of these evenings wondering if anyone suspects anything, but in reality, no one is really paying much attention to this! We told one of our friends about a week after our pretend cocktails and they had no idea!
You say your colleagues know you were ttc before - I would tell them the DR says as long as you're TTC you should avoid alcohol.

I had a huge work event in Atlanta and I am typically a huge drinker that helps shut down the bar. I made friends with the bartender early in the evening and requested a sprite and lime in a cocktail glass. Everytime I nodded to him he brought me my glass. So not only did I keep up the total lush perception, everyone thought I was besties with the bartender. I think it worked since it was a few weeks ago and no one has said anything yet!! *fingers crossed*
Hiya just a quick update! Had the hen party last night, I took wine poured it in a glass but just kept hold of the glass, then Tipped it out an refilled it with lemonade! Every1 was drunk so didn't notice anyway, and being sober was quite fun, watching others make fools of themselves he he x
