In laws

My mother in law insists that my baby doesn't need anything new because this is my husband and my 4th child, mind you our youngest is 5 and I no longer have baby things. Anyways I am all for garage sales but there are items I won't use second hand such as car seats. So today I get home from work and there lies a car seat from a garage sale after I told her I won't use them second hand due to not knowing if it was in an accident. Am I being unreasonable about this??

Re: In laws

  • Not unreasonable at all. She should respect A) your wishes and B) federal recommendations regarding carseat safety.

  • No. 2 hand carseats are never recommended as you can't guarantee their safety.
    You're not being unreasonable!
  • Its actually against the law to sell used car seats at garage sales or to buy display baby furniture from any store!

  • Thank you. She just makes me feel like I'm being a brat about this, I just really don't know how to handle this.
  • No. Like PPs have said, buying a secondhand carseat is totally unsafe.

  • You're not being unreasonable, she seems very uninformed.  I wouldn't let her use the carseat in her car either.

  • Ridiculous. You are totally correct and she needs to relax.

  • Wow. That's so disrespectful and pushy. Is she normally so passive aggressive?

I think I would be sitting down with her and having a very clear discussion about boundaries and what happens when she disrespects them.

    Good luck!

  • We have had these discussions over the years. I have two kids that her son adopted when we got married and she always treated them like they were less then because their not "really" her grand kids and because they are both disabled. Now that we are expecting I can get rid of her but it all has to be her way and it is really getting old. She was going to throw a baby shower then decided not to because she realized her family would find out about the baby, their going to find out anyways.
  • Holy crap JM she sounds like a nut bar I am sorry you are stuck dealing with her.

  • Why wouldn't she want them to know about the baby?! That is crazy!
  • Nope.  Not ridiculous at all.  I refuse to use a used car seat.  That will be the one thing I insist on being new.
