Yeast Infection Rash

My daughter was just diagnosed with a yeast infection.  Her pediatrician prescribed an antifungal cream that we put on once a day at night and said not to use any other ointments on her (e.g., desitin, triple paste, etc) as that can worsen the yeast infection.  Last night we used the prescribed cream after her bath and she seems so red and irritated today.  It's seems odd to not use anything else.  Besides feeding her yogurt, is there anything else I can do to speed up the healing process or soothe her poor skin?

Re: Yeast Infection Rash

  • My pedi told me OTC cream under a high percent zinc cream, twice a day and try not to wipe the cream off unless necessary. LO has always looked 50% better after her first over night application. Was the skin dry before putting the cream on?

  • For my daughter it got worse the first day after the anti fungal cream, then cleared up fast after that.

  • My doctor told me to use the anti-fungal and then triple paste on top of it. It cleared up really fast. We'll also do corn starch on top of the creams.

This exactly... right down to the corn starch. It works wonders.

  • Thanks for all the replies!  So far we've used the cream the past two nights without anything else and it still looks the same, if not worse.  I tried to dry her as much as possible before applying the cream.  I may try the triple paste tomorrow and the corn starch to see if that helps things along.  Hopefully this will clear up soon...I feel so bad for her!

  • Usually the creams are twice a day applications. You need a zinc type cream on top so that the urine doesn't wash away the cream and it stays on the skin as long as possible to work. I didn't mention it before, but as much naked time as possible is also helpful. LO always gets really bad when she is cutting a tooth so it could be related to teething too.
  • We have also done a bath with Baking Soda sprinkled in the water. Let her soak for a bit. The baking soda does wonders. Used with the combination of the anti-fungal, desitin, and aquafor (per our pedi - equal parts), usually healed up within a day or two.

  • Good to know!  I have been using triple paste between the times I've been putting on the prescribed cream, but have not used it with the cream as I wasn't sure if that would mess with it's effectiveness.  It's a bit better today with the triple paste, but maybe I'll try it with the antifungal cream tomorrow to see if it speeds things up.  She actually is cutting two teeth right now.  We also just came back from a beach vacation and the doctor said it was most likely because she was in a wet bathing suit and those horrible, useless swim diapers almost every day of our trip.
