ERF car seat question

Hey ladies! I know several of you are passionate about ERF so I thought this was a good place to ask.

My son is 38" tall and about 34 lbs in a Graco MyRide 65. He's getting pretty close to the top, but I'm finding it hard to tell if he's outgrown it. Between the car seat cover puffing up over the shell and keeping him still, I can't tell. He's not extraordinarily tall, but he has a very long torso.

Thoughts? Advice?

Re: ERF car seat question

  • Hi OSC! *waves*
J isn't as tall as C but has a long torso too and he's too tall for our MyRide65. It's now DD's seat.

Can you go to a carseat inspection place and have them check? It will be easier to tell then in the picture.
The closest place that inspects is about an hour away. If we can't make a decision we're comfortable with that might be the only option though. I hadn't thought of that.

Are there any carseat "events" near you? Our health dept. does monthly checks in addition to the ones that come to hospitals, BRU, car dealerships, etc. It may be worth calling around and seeing if someone you don't know about does it closer before you just drive further.
I don't know, I'll have to check. I know there was one in town this summer - hopefully it wasn't a yearly thing. I live in the middle of amish country, so this stuff is hard to find sometimes! lol

  • Yup I'm agreeing with Fred. He's outgrown it.

  • Does anyone know if the BRU trade in event works on Dionos?

  • Does anyone know if the BRU trade in event works on Dionos?
It does not. The trade in event only works for specific brands and none of them is Diono. The cheapest place I've found them is Amazon.

We were originally going to get a Graco Nautalis when Charlie grew out of the MyRide, but now I'm wondering if we should spring for a Radian to keep him RF a little longer. It looks like it goes up to 44", which would give him several more months of use.

We can't fit 2 RF in our smaller car though - would it be weird to have one seat RF and one FF? The bigger car (mini van) is our long trip car. DH's car is just for commuting/daycare drop off.

I doubt you'll get to 44" in the Radian. But I'm all for ERF. Last winter I bought a Foonf to keep Char RF. With the angle adjuster, I bet the Radian would fit RF in the smaller car. If not, I don't think it's weird to do them different. Char is about to outgrow our old school 35 pound Radian 80, and we will not buy a new one for her, so we'll probably FF one car and RF the other. If she objects I'll turn the Foonf too because it's a really good FF seat too.
I wish we could get a Foonf, but its just not in the price range.

He'll seldom be in the smaller car (DH picks up from daycare 1-2 days a week, max) so I'm not as concerned about that one. I really, really want to keep him safer in the van though.

  • If I can fit 2 Radians RF in a Dodge Dart using the angle adjusters you should be able to as well.

  • Honestly, I don't think it's weird at all. Rosie goes for RF to FF in many cars. None of it bothers her. If you would like to keep him RF longer then get the Radian for the van and FF his current car seat in the other.

  • I'm in the same situation with the same seat. I'm glad you posted this. We upgraded one of our seats to a Radian late last year, and I'm trying to decide whether to do the same in my car or not. I really don't want to turn her yet, so it might be going in that direction.

  • I've heard the Graco Headwise/Mysize is the tallest seat out there...mine came today so if anyone with tall kiddos is interested I could measure and take pics of that and the Chicco Nextfit tomorrow and post them for reference. The Headwise is only $159 right now at Target!

Char is about 39.5", 34 pounds. She is super long torsoed though. She wears a 4T to regular 4/XS in tops and 3T in pants.
Nora is built similarly in the way that she wears a size or 2 up in tops and one-pieces than she does in bottoms.

I'm guessing she's 37ish inches based on the fact that she was between 36 and 37 at her 2 year appointment.. I'm thinking she has outgrown the RF limits for height since she also has a long torso. Ugh.

  • I checked out some places for the Raidian and with the right combo of sales I think Kohl's will have it cheapest, believe it or not. Its $322 then with 20% off it comes to $258 + $50 in Kohl's cash. Now to wait for them to start giving out KC again. Hmm....
