Painful and Irritating things happening "down there" (TMI?)

So I have had an ingrown hair down in my nether regions for what seems like the entire damn summer.  I have always gotten them down there and while they hurt they usually resolve on their own.  But I haven't had one this bad or painful in quite a few years.  Then, this summer and I can't even remember when, I got one, and it's still there, and I know it's been at least since the end of July.   It gets bigger and more painful and then smaller like it's going to resolve, then bigger and more painful again.  A couple nights ago I put some hot compresses on it and then yesterday it hurt so badly all day I was literally limping around trying not to irritate it.  Then it was actually bleeding for a while yesterday.  My underwear looked like I was spotting!  I put some antibiotic ointment on it last night and today it feels slightly better, but I guess we'll see what tomorrow brings! So annoying.

And then, to top it all off I found a small sore, pimple like lump on my labia minora.  I looked it up and I guess it could be a Bartholin cyst?  Which I really hope not! I definitely don't have any STD's so it's not that, but ugh!  Luckily I have an appt. w/the midwife today so I'll ask her about it. Stupid vagina.

    this makes me cringe haha
  • Yeah it makes me cringe too!  You can't even see the hair, I'm not digging around in there, with my luck it will get infected!

  • You might need to have it drained. I had a bad infected ingrown hair once and they did that and gave me antibiotic ointment. Hope it resolves soon!

  • Definitely get it taken care of! No need to be in pain or risk it getting infected for no reason. As for the other bump, I had a bartholin cyst and it wasn't on the labia. It was more off to the side of the actual vag opening and it was deep below the surface--felt like a pea under the skin.

  • Warning do not google bartholin cyst  and pull up the wikipedia page. DON'T DO IT.

OP I'm pretty sure I had one of those after I had DD and it was like how @vineyardmel described it. I would go get your stuff checked out.

  • I have an ingrown hair, or folicle cyst as the doc says (sounds less gross?) She said baths are best (my tub is yucky) so a hot washcloth for 20 mins 3 times a day. If it gets worse she said they'll numb it and take care of it for me. Washcloth seems to work!

LOL!!!  I couldn't help myself.  I googled it.  Def was a bad idea.  I sprayed my poor laptop with chai tea hahahaha.

OP, I hope everything turns out ok!

  • Have you tried a bit of peroxide on the infected hair?  Peroxide in small dosed on occasion is safe according to my doc.  I got one a while back and put a small band aid on it to keep it from rubbing while it healed.  Those small circular band aids - I'm not sure what they are called.

  • Nothing much to add, OP, except that your situation totally sucks and I'm sorry about it.  A week or so ago I had the largest, most teenager-esque zit on my neck.  It was too painful to deal with, and looked like a tumor.  Long (and gross) story short, the whole thing just ended up making me so fucking cranky because among all the vomiting, headaches, rashes, hot/cold flashes, etc. this zit was now adding major insult to injury.  I hope you can get to the doc and get some relief soon.  FWIW, I used to get ingrown hairs down south, but in recent years started luffa-ing with some mild soap once a week (and always before shaving), and that has stopped them for me.

  • Bartholyn cysts are awful, I had one reoccur 7 or 8 times in my 20s. Get on with gyno ASAP. It could get infected.
  • I had an appt with the midwife yesterday and she looked at it and said it didn't look like much of anything, and to just keep an eye on it (not that I can since it's way the frig down there, gotta use a mirror for that).  She took a swab of both that and the hair lump to make sure it's not an STD, which I'm not worried about since I just really don't think it could be that.  My H and I have been together for 10 yrs, and you would think if I had an STD at this point he would have gotten it too!

  • It sounds to me like your ingrown hair is infected and is causing a swollen lymph node in your labia. Maybe Epsom salt baths? Or polysporin on the ingrown? You really need to resolve the ingrown first and see if the other goes away. Good luck!
