Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Pedi mentioned starting solids yesterday.

He said when Ian is around 13-14lbs, we can start him on solids. ?This surprised me b/c I thought the general rule was to wait until 6mos. ?He said "that's one school of thought, but most babies can't wait that long." ?Based on his current rate of weight gain that would put him at around 4-4.5mos. . .anyone else's pedi suggest starting solids based on weight rather than age? ?I mean I'm not going to argue the point but was just surprised.

Re: Pedi mentioned starting solids yesterday.

  • At Ean's 4-mo check-up, our pedi said to introduce solids by mid-Dec (so like now). He has NO interest in them whatsoever. He only wants to hold the spoon. I figured we'd try again next month.

  • Mine said we could start at 4 months if we wanted, or whenever DS was taking in 32+ oz consistently every day. He said we should def. start by 6 months.

  • My pedi wants me to EBF until DS is 6 months old. She said if I wanted to give cereal I could, but I didn't have to.

4-6 months of age is when most pedi's say to start cereal, but the final decision is yours.

    ?

  • It seems like most pedis recommend solids during the 4-month appointment. Mine did. I told her I was in no hurry. She said she suggested starting before 6 months to reduce the risk of food aversions. I said I'd give it a try around 5 1/2 months. But I'm not starting any sooner than that. If there's no nutritional benefit, I just don't see the point.

Ask the pedi why and get the reasons and make your own decision.

    Your baby, your decision.

  • Sounds like BS to me.  Most say to wait until 4 months b/c of allergy risk.  6 months is better.  I also have to argue that most babies are not ready for solids at 4 months.  I say read up on for yourself and decide for yourself.

  • Our Pedi said that we could start cereal at our 4 month appt, but the decision was ours to make.  We decided to slowly introduce rice cereal and oatmeal to DD since she didn't seem to be satisfied with only formula anymore (ie was getting hungry again quickly after feeding)
  • I go to a practice, and I saw not my usual Pedi at the 4month appt.  This lady recommended solids.  She was 1/2 way through the sentence when I said "we'd rather wait until 6 months".  she made a note and we went on our merry way.

  • My pedi said we'd discuss it at our next apt (4 mo).

  • I have heard this as well.. but some babies aren't ready until 6 months. try it and see...if there is no interest, no harm done...try again later.

my babe was 13lbs10oz at his 2 month check up! He was born at 8lbs9oz so not much more than your DS was at birth... If that statement were true of 13-14lbs I'd be starting solids now and that is just not going to happen. I'm going to wait until 6 months to try.

I'm waiting until 6 months, because I EBF and that is sufficient.

  • Our pedi said we'd talk about solids next time, at her 4 mo appt. ?She will be 4.5 mos at the acutal appt.
  • Shoot, my 7 week old is 14.5 lbs.  No solids for him.
  • I'm starting solids at 4 months, per my peds suggestion but also because I feel like DS is "ready"- he's more than double his birth weight, eats close to 40 ounces of formula a day and seems interested in eating-- watches me eat, has reached out for my spoon, etc. ?We'll see how he does-- if he's not ready, I'll try again in a few weeks. ?
