(XP on TTCAL because I wanted to join in on all the AWing. I felt left out. :) )

How's that for a visual!

I just thought I would write up an update since after 10 months of TTA, I actually have something to post about. I finally worked up the courage to start RPL testing this cycle.

Back story for those who don't know:
After my third loss in December, my RE ordered the full panel work up for RPL testing. My husband and I decided to put a hold on all things TTC for a few months and then complete testing in March. Well, March rolled around and I had no desire to go ahead with testing, but spoke to my insurance company and three different labs for pricing since I don't have IF insurance. The total bill would come to be $6,000. So while I was still healing my little heart, we started setting aside money for this bill. In August, my bank account and I were ready to go forward with testing. I met with my doctor  and everything was set. As I posted in the last bi-weekly check in, CD1, came about a week early last cycle and I was out of town. I wasn't planning on a 20 day cycle. I would have been back in town for the HSG window, but there wasn't a doctor available to do the exam.

Yesterday was CD1 and I'm going in for the full panel of blood work tomorrow and my HSG is scheduled for next Friday (the 13th... oooooo). I'm nervous about the 21 blood labs and hoping it doesn't mean 21 vials. I'll start to worry about the HSG after tomorrow, I'm sure, but for now I'm ok with it. I don't have reason to believe I have tubal blockage or scarring so I'm hoping it will be as easy as possible.

Most of my fear and worry lie in the results and possible subsequent treatments.

  • I hope you find some answers with your RPL tests. I can totally relate to how scary everything is. I remember when I had all my testing done alternating between hoping something was wrong and praying everything was normal. Sometimes I think the not knowing (which is what our final diagnosis has become) is worse than actually getting an abnormal result.

Don't worry about how much blood they take. As a lab tech, I can tell you that we always leave you enough to come back and see us again!! ;)

    TTC since April 2010
    BFP #1 – March 2011, missed m/c April 2011
    BFP #2 – October 2011, m/c November 2011
Surprise BFP #3 – December 2011, diagnosed as cornual, terminated January 2012
    BFP #4 – June 2012, m/c July 2012
Diagnosed with bicornuate ute and MTHR gene mutation
    BFP #5 – October 2012, missed m/c November 2012
    BFP #6 – January 2013, m/c March 2013
No longer TTC. Diagnosis: Hostile ute. Heartbroken and bitter. Pursuing surrogacy.
June 2013 - Carrier found! Could this really happen?!

I'm more worried about how many times they'll have to stick me. I wish you were my lab tech. :) I have to get blood drawn every 6 weeks and it always results in at least 3 sticks and bruises.

  • Good luck with your testing!  I started mine this cycle, but I'm pretty sure I'll have to do the CD3 bloodwork again due to a weird cycle :P  (Pretty sure now that I didn't hit CD3, but had a long bout of spotting that mimicked a period).

Anyway, I was worried about all the bloodwork as well, but the nurse assured me that I wasn't even close to giving the maximum amount allowed... that made me feel better.  They stuck me once (I didn't watch), I didn't faint and I was fine to drive home.  No big deal.

The HSG was uncomfortable (ok painful for 2 minutes or so), but otherwise uneventful.

So glad you are proceeding with testing.  I avoided calling and making my appointment forever too, because I was worried about the results.  Seems silly now.

Is it $6000 for just the RPL testing, or does that include something else?

I hope it goes really smooth for you. I hate having blood taken as my veins suck too. But it won't be 21 vials (although it will be many - I think mine was 16). Remember to stay super hydrated beforehand, which helps the veins.

HSGs suck. There is no way around it. But you gave me your support, and you ofcourse (always) have mine. Tell them before hand how sensitive you are, they'll try to go easy on you (if they can).

I don't know if I should hope you get answers or not. I always hope to find the reason behind it all and I still haven't - just general theories. But I hope, whichever way it goes, that you can move forward afterwards.
Thanks for all of your advice and support!

I'm sorry your CD3 testing got screwed up. I remember you posting about that. That sucks. The $6,000 includes all of my blood work, HSG and H's 2 blood tests.

    SIGGY

So proud of you!  I know you've been contemplating this testing for a while now and it's a HUGE step to make it happen.  I've not had that testing done, but I imagine they'll combine vials where they can.  I hope the draw goes smoothly for you and that you are able to get some answers that can help lead you to a baby in your arms.  This is a scary step, but potentially an important one.  I'm so proud of you and so excited about the future this testing could help bring your way.

ps. The GIF in your siggy made me chuckle
